Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Traveller
Do any of you SEr's have things that you made as a special treat when you first moved into your own place? Or do you have recommendations to try out my new stainless appliances? I am up for anything!!

Something that will fill your new home with wonderful smells .. a pot roast is easy while you're unpacking. an apple pie. When we moved here over forty years ago with three little kids I think we ordered take out lol.

yay, congrats on the new home! i would second @nanajoie - something that makes your home smell yummy would be a good first meal. if it were me, i'd probably stay away from anything too adventurous (don't want first cooking experience in new kitchen to be stressful, and you'll be figuring out where each item goes and stuff) and go with a favorite that i know how to make well.

Cook something in the slow cooker. It you can even use your pretty new kitchen say, browning the meat/veggies before it goes in (seems like just extra work but is actually a huge flavor boost). It will bubble away, slowly making your house smell awesome, and it requires little to no attention (depending on what you're making), which is great for when you have to deal with packing, moving, ...

Congratulations Traveller! If there is something you were not able to make in your old place, I'd make that as the first thing. So if you lived in an apartment before and couldn't barbecue, do it now. Webbers are cheap and I bet you could find one on sale. Or make your favorite homey-type dish. For me that would be either beef stew or a nice roasted chicken - not sure if you'd want to do ...

You should make a nice loaf of bread. It will make your house smell so good!

Congratulations Traveller! How exciting! Aren't their some old (eastern European?) traditions about having bread and salt in your kitchen, or gifting bread and salt to a new homeowner so that their 'larder' is always bountiful? I suppose it depends on 'why' and 'when' you're coooking. If you're looking for something to fill a belly while you're unpacking, then that's one thing, but if...

Apple pie, but make sure you protect your new oven floor with something. Last thing you want is the smell of charred pie juices wafting through your home for the next 24 hours.

I love these ideas! Thank you and thank you all for the well wishes, too! I think that I might not try a pie from scratch just yet, as it's more complicated than I would like while I am learning the new place/appliances and where to put things. :) Hopefully, I can just find what I am looking for after I put it all away! I love the idea of slow-roasting something, either a pot roast ...

My mother, a Filipina, always told us that the first thing to bring into a new house is rice so that you'll never be hungry. So I'd always put the rice in the pantry first and then go to Popeye's for fried chicken and red beans and rice. That's been out moving in tradition for our past three moves. You can tell a lot about an oven by how well things bake at different levels in it. What ...

Congrats on the new digs! I think a batch of chocolate chip cookies would be yummy and make the house smell great -- plus, a plate of those on the counter will be a great welcoming treat for all the friends and family who may be stopping by to help your "house warming".

My first memorable meal in a new place is always a few days into the move. I usually can't be bothered to cook on the first day (hello pizza), haven't bought groceries the second (takeout), and am busy exploring the town on the third. So I corrupt my apartment with ramen and coffee before making a truly memorable first meal. Actually, one of the first things I make in a new home is stock, because I love to have it in my freezer and...
