I have 66K on my '02 1.8T GTI and have never changed the 02 sensors. Just got this code - 16804 catalyst system bank 1 efficiency below threshold. Does this refer to an 02 sensor? If so which one? Or what else? Car runs like normal. Anyone have any gas engine info?
The code means that the ECU thinks the catalytic converter is not working properly. The rear sensor is what tells the ECU what's happening. FYI - bank 1 refers to whichever side of the motor cylinder 1 is on (only important on 'V' engines). Sensor 1 is the front sensor, 2 is the rear.
I've seen exhaust leaks cause codes. You'd have to be running real rich to trip the rear sensor - I've ...
I can almost guarantee you your car needs a new catalyst, and you can only use the OEM ones (or it will just keep failing the cat monitor).
I can also almost guarantee you Volkswagen has not only a TSB, but perhaps and extended warranty on it.
I can also almost guarantee you will have to fight tooth and nail with the dealer to get it covered.
However, your 2002 with 66k should still...

Shouldn't be any problem at all as long as the fault code isn't cleared out. VWoA will want some PID info from OBDI and a copy of 01-04-046 failing. If the cat has a rattle but no signs of impact damage, it is also ...
It usually takes about 5 tries, stomping and screaming, crying, etc, to get the STL area dealers to replace a cat under warranty.
The last one, an ATQ B5, they blamed on an improper water pump install as to the reason the left bank cat DTC kept coming back....
Now, I ask you, HOW would you even be able to see IF a water pump was installed wrong on an ATQ engine first of all, and ...

Axelg, If you are using VCDS to scan this car please post an auto scan. This will help identify the complete fault code descriptions and installed modules.
You may want to start a new thread with the scan.
