Add the Reds to the list of teams that are slashing, rather than spending, this off-season. Fanhouse's Ed Price and Jeff Fletcher are reporting that Cincinnati is looking to cut their payroll from $71MM in 2009 to between the $65-$70MM range next season. While it may not sound like much of a reduction, Cot's Baseball Contracts lists the...
Does not sound good, but I have read reports from nearly every other team that's not the Red Sox or Yankees, that they will be slashing or freezing payroll. MLBTR even reported that the Dodgers might not have enough payflex to resign Randy Wolf. I think we will be surprised at what most Free Agents sign for this off season.
If the Reds get rid of Brandon Phillips and Aaron Harang next year, they can kiss any chance at competing goodby.
I can understand not wanting to take on additional payroll and I can even get cutting some payroll, but the cut should be to Cordero and/or Arroyo, whose numbers are a bit easier to replace. I'd personally like to even keep Arroyo, but Cordero (who has been very good) is a guy...

It probably means the Reds will either a.) trade for fewer prospects and/or b.) will pay some of the salary to clear some space on the books.
both ...

Fly in the face? I think it actually corroborates it. No one wanted those players because it meant taking on their salaries, and that was only possible if ...

Lets see. The Reds already have a low payroll. They have a fair number of decent or good players but several holes to...

Using the increase in team value to rack up more debt and become highly leveraged is simply not good business no matter how you slice it. Spending every last penny of operating profits isn't exactly smart either. I agree that the Reds tend to cry poor but what they need to do is use their current resources more effectively not spend every last dime they make.
At issue in this thread has been a disagreement over whether the Reds ownership is trying to win or simply trying to make as much cash as possible for their private coffers. Forbes gives us a rough outline of team finances including franchise value and operating income (OI or "earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization"). We also have rough estimate of payroll figures (from either Cots or USA today)....

If the Reds get off to a good start and are in...

Every contender is going to look at Cordero, Arroyo and Harang's contract and wonder if they can get...

As long as Walt doesn't mortgage the farm...
