Thread: Fan speed killing me

Started 1 month ago by Danny D
I just bought a server its only been used for a couple of months. I just plugged it in and this thing is LOUD!!! I opened it up and there is only one fan that is so loud its not even funny. I tried speedfan but that is not lowering the speed. Any idea on what to do other than taking the fan out lol.

So Danny what is this "server" And is this for your home or work network??? What server did you buy? Some of the dell poweredge 1 or 2 U servers can be quite loud when they first power up.. But normally the fans slow down after post, etc. There was a known issue with the fan noise if I recall correctly with some dell models, that they corrected with a bios update, etc.. So giving us ...

I'm going to guess it's the CPU fan (since you haven't said specifically where the fan is) What size fan? Is it connected via Molex/3 pin/4 pin connector? If it's a fan that doesn't support PWM it's only going to run at one speed... MAX speed, won't matter what software you use.

Budman, I actually got this one for personal use, but I will be testing CC on it and stuff like that. Its just for testing. It's the fan at the right bottom corner. The CPU fan is loud, but NOTHING compared to that one. The server is running windows xp but i will be putting CC today. Some info:

Im getting a headache.

Danny D replied 1 month ago
I turned off the big fan so its not as loud but the CPU fan is also loud. Not as loud as the big one, but its loud.

Danny D replied 1 month ago
Right after turning it off the temperature jumped to 56C. Plugged it back in it went down to 43C.

That does not look like a "SERVER" to me -- looks like some crap someone put together in their garage that you could put in a rack.. The pci slots are not even usable since from what I can tell the cover would not allow you to put a card in them and put the cover back on. Do you have maker and model number of that thing? I could not make out any labels or anything from the picture. That ...

Can we concentrate on the fans lol. Ok this is a computer not a server. Nope they are not usable, but I will most likely be getting a case and putting everything in there. There is plenty of vents. This was used as a server. The only thing i can see on it is colomachine.com serial #: 20060-0071

Get rid of the fan grille above the bottom right fan. It's pointless and only increases turbulence (and therefore noise).

Quote - (Wuffy @ Nov 13 2009, 21:37) you should also go take a high school computer repair course. There are some nice people about I agree with the comments here though you should re-case the machine, the case there looks really bad and normally the small power supplies generate a bit of heat and the fans are loud. When you re-case it you should obviously change the power supply Them small CPU fans are not the greatest of...

you should look at getting a real server. Take a look at say dells entry level servers. Or if you want a rack server take a look at HP's DL-360's. They have models starting at just over 1k that are pretty decent.

One suggestion would be getting a LAN cable and putting that machine somewhere in your house where you won't be able to hear it. You can just access it remotely with remote desktop if you ever need to access it.

if you dont want noise, use a normal atx case for that system, if you can live with some noise, please get a real server, FTW.
