It's classified as a personal defense cartridge. It fits in with the same category as the 4.6x30mm that HK makes. It was designed to perform as well as the 9x19mm, with less felt recoil. It probably wouldn't be the best coyote rifle, unless you planned on doing shorter-range hunting. I would suggest a .243, .222, or a .223 for coyotes.

I would say Rifle because of the necked down aspect of the cartridge. Since its a bit of an obscure cartridge I wouldn't shoot volumes of it but it does have the fps and the power to kill coyotes.

The 5.7 is a really fun caliber to shoot but it's over priced. You could just about buy two AR15s for the cost of the rifle. The ammo is also about double the cost of 5.56/223 rem. Now if you're dead set on it look into a 5.7 AR15 upper. These runs about 700.00 and will attach to any .223/5.56 lower.

Legally the SS190 to SS197 rounds are possibly a pistol cartridge, but it's really fuzzy. It depends on the law of course. In California the law is that a handgun cartridge is one that is "principally" used in handguns (CA PC 12323). You could argue that the SS190 was not developed to principally be used in the FN Five-seven, and so it is not "principally" for handguns. However, you could ...

I would just buy (preferably build) an AR chambered in 5.56mm or .223 wylde. That way you can shoot 5.56 and all .223 loads. You can make a good multi purpose rifle good for both predators and self defense. The 5.7 round is really pretty weak, with the power of about a .22 magnum.
