It helps, but the thing is I'm no Star Wars fan, nor a Lord of the Rings fan but I get why they're so praised. Donnie Darko isn't as great as people make it out to be. It's just a very good movie, not the 132nd best movie ever. Damn it! We're never getting any candy if Kenny keeps eating people!

Donnie Darko is not overrated in the least bit. The movie is well written and filmed, and is very deserving to be at 132. The time-loop theory is very well supported by every scene in the movie. Every character in the movie portrays their part regarding the lop cycles extremely well. The Matrix is an amazing movie also and I believe is deserving of its high rating. The fiction behind the matrix does not hurt its rating so how does the fiction...

Donnie Darko defies logic, but makes sense on a subconscious level. Like a dream does. Making a film that works that way is a stroke of genious.

Very much like Mulholland Drive, all of the separate parts make sense on their own, but not necessarily when you put them together. Just like an actual dream...

Don't know if I can explain it agentad. All art is subjective isn't it? For me, who is not a teenager, an EMO, angry with the world or any other pigeonhole some people want this movie to put us in, it is just a beautiful work of art, both in story telling and in vision. I can still identify with Donnie (I was a teenager once!) and I can still find something new in the characters and the storyline everytime I watch it. How many films...

When i first watched this movie, i also felt it was overrated, but when i watched it when i was a few years older i saw it as a masterpiece, a beautiful and dark commentary on life. There is so much to take away from this movie. If you're only walking away with one thing, you're missing the point.
