Thread: Epson 3880 feedback and smaller prints?

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Katherine Lud
Has anyone had any experience with the 3880 yet? I am very interested in first impressions since there are almost no real reviews out there for this printer. Also, a total nubee question to home printing, how do you print smaller pix (4x6)? The manufacturer says "complete borderless printing on the following cut-sheet sizes." What does that mean? Do you have to have smaller paper to feed in...

Curious about that printer too... For your other question... just feed 4x6 sheets into the printer, make sure you have borderless selected if that's what you want. No need to cut anything.

I am just starting to get interested in printing at home so I can have more control over my prints and true colors. Are these printers archival quality? Are they like lab prints or do I need to go for a dye sub printer to get that sort of quality? Thanks! Katherine

photo inkjet printing is state of the art as far as archival goes. It significantly exceeds the amount of time old school c-41 prints lasted from before the digital photography revoluion. However, that has spurred the manufacturers to get off their asses with c-41 based processes as well and both kodak and fuji current generation wet color processes finally have good archival capabilities as ...

Hi Katherine! I purchased an Epson 3800 (not the newer 3880) in June. This was my first real attempt at home printing. I too had reservations that prints made at home could rival commercial lab prints. In short, I am very happy with the prints that I am getting. In some ways they are better than I was getting from a commercial lab. I think that is at least partially due to the fact I can...

Hi, I just upgraded from an Epson 2200 to the 3880. I have printed various 8x10 landscapes and some portraits. Colors on the prints are a very close match to the colors on my MacBook Pro monitor (calibrated using ColorMunki). Colors and details are great on the landscapes. I am especially pleased with the skin tones as they are much more accurate than I used to get on my Epson 2200. So far...

re: "My only complaint is that the printer does not lay down any ink where the image color matches the native color of the paper (i.e. white). Although I have gotten used to this, it still bothers me just a little. " Just adjust your "white" down a few notches. Instead of 255 I use between 220 and 250 to get ink down depending on the paper and content of the photo.

is this done via the driver

If you're editing your image in Photoshop, you can use Image>Adjustments>Levels and set your white output level (lower slider) to something less than 255. I've found that 245 works well, without dulling the highlights too much. I'm also a recent 2200 to 3880 convert and so far quite pleased, though I've only made a few prints.

I am thinking that I will put this printer on my wishlist for the holidays. :) Maybe Santa will have an extra large sled to fit it on... Katherine

Go here for information. This is a pretty good website: http://www.printerville.net/2009/08/31/epson-annou nces-the-stylus-pro-3880/ I just got mine. I had to go direct to Epson as B&H quickly sold out. After I ordered the unit on the 27th, I went back to the Epson website the next day seeking additional information, and found they had sold out as well. So I'm guessing I got the last one or one...

Thanks for the pointer - not at all an obvious thing to do, but it seems to work! Hopefully Adobe will create a new category of template to allow doing this in a more straightforward way for LR3. Ray

You can get the 3800 and get $300.00 back. As printerville.net noted, they are pretty much the same and although the results on the 3880 would allegedly be better, I believe only the VERRRY trained eye could tell any difference. The approximately $300.00 cost difference, considering I would be getting a state-of-the-art machine, I felt would be worth it. Nor are the 2880 and 1900 slouches. I opted for the 3800 line due to the economies...

The current beta is months away from a release version. From what I've read, there are still a lot of features that are not fully fleshed out. Adobe is apparently also holding back a few major new features entirely until the actual release, to keep the competition in the dark as long as possible. At least these are the rumors floating around. Dominic.Chan wrote: > > Ray Ritchie wrote: > > Thanks for the...

Hi Katherine, I also have a 3800, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. It is a great printer. Here is a review from Luminous Landscapes that really gives the gist of the newer Vivid Magenta K3 inks vs. the 3800's standard K3 inks: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/3880.shtml As another posted noted, depending on your subject, you may not see much difference in the colors in the shots. Now, when do we get...
