Thread: Engine FAILURE... help appreciated.

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by etxxz
The OPN keeps popping up as the likely culprit. Going down this path, it boggles me why the cam gears, timing chain and intake cams are completely bathed in oil. The engine ran like this for about 30minutes while i pulled off the track, troubleshooted it some e36 guys, gathered my stuff and headed home (or attempted to atleast) I locktited (locktite 262!) the OPN when i installed this engine...

^^ well thank you. i got it yesterday. Houston, we have a problem! the OPN did indeed fall COMPLETELY off... and because i didnt know, i lapped like this AND troubleshooted the engine like this. I'm installing gauges, lesson learned F*****! pictured as well are the bearing surfaces. The crank is smooth, but look at it. The bearing surfaces also look the same. The con rods *bearings* do have a ...

From the carnage I have seen on S50s with oil issues I would say you live a charmed life or you still had oil pressure despite the opn taking a digger. My guess would be you won't need any crank or rod machine work, just be sure to mic the bearings to make sure you get the right replacements. If it were me I would pull the head since your already there and check the pistons etc.

The ol OPN gotcha. Damn that sux. It just happens, unfortunately. Do the e30's not have an oil pressure light in the cluster? If not, I would get one AND an oil pressure gauge. Redundancy is good on the oil pressure issue. I think I might safety wire mine this weekend (doing S54 pan/pump and new LCA's).

crank looks fine. Its coming off so i can do the seals too. I'm changing clothes now to take off the head. That may take a couple hours though at my pace -.- I'll make a parts list tomorow, order them if i can. Most of them should be at my house when i come back from cali a week from now. A week or two more of build and i can get back to my normal life after the gf will probably break up with me like 5 times during this period...

I would have expected the crankshaft to be destroyed far before the camshaft would do that once the engine loses lubrication. You may have gotten very lucky. Let's see if that crank is still in good shape.
