Thread: Engine Cylinder Bore Oversize PG -G60

Started 4 months, 2 weeks ago by Richardshoes
Hi guys. What would happen if I installed new rings and re-fitted pistons into an engine that has 0.05mm/0.002" oversize bores? I think this will cause more loading on the rings as the piston pivots on the gudgeon pin. The Bentley Manual states 81.01 +/- 0.08mm - I am reading 81.14mm The pistons are within limits. Cheers.

Do you really mean 0.05mm oversize? That sounds more like a hone than a rebore. Do you have standard size pistons? Check the ring gaps to be sure, but I'd think it'll be a bit loose.

Yes 0.05mm above top limit. The old rings have a 1mm gap which is the maximum allowable wear limit. I have yet to order new rings, but they will likely have more meat on them, bringing the gap in a bit. So other than the gap being big, would there be any other adverse affects caused by the big bores? The pistons are standard size and I honed the cylinders to remove a ring ridge.

I'm not sure... hopefully someone else will read in and comment.

from what you have said the bore is 0.05mm too large, the max size would have been 81.09mm,doesn`t seem like a lot but at the speed a piston moves, new pistons i think.

I am trying to refurb an engine on a budget. Therefore I'd like to re-use the main components. All bores read on average about 81.14mm - Bentley spec: 81.01 +/-0.08 All piston skirts come in at 80.95 - Bentley spec: 80.985 +/-0.04 The gap on the new rings will most likely be outwith new bore/ring tolerance but well within the wear limit of 1mm. The piston can pivot a larger angle on ...

.05 over max limit? slap them in with new rings youll be fine, Ive put back far worse on owners commands/budget with no issues(within reason of course)
