Thread: Editing HDV in a DV timeline issue

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by Casey Turner
Up until now I've only edited with DV footage, but the project I'm working on has some footage shot in HDV, and the rest in DV. The HDV footage is shot in 1080i 60fps, with a canon camera. My DV sequence is set to DV NTSC 29.97fps. My issue is this, when I pull the HDV footage to the DV sequence, it has horizontal lines (artifacting) around the edges of objects when I preview it on ...

Hi all, Still trying to arrive at the best workflow/method to preserve quality or at least loose less from this HD pillar boxed 4:3 to full 16:9 HD. I've been uprezing Betacam footage through an MXO2 to 1080i59.94 in Prores 422 in order to preserve the largest amount of image data. Then I scale the 4:3 in FCP7 to fill the 1080 frame and position vertically to select the 4:3. This ...

I just bought FCP 7 and it'll be here in about a week. In my previous FCP version 6.0.6 importing my P2 footage has been quite a hassle to say the least. In FCP 7 do you still need to go to Panasonic's website and get the AVC-Intra Software Decoder for Mac and install that OR is P2 footage native now and a lot easier to Log & Transfer? thx Dual Core, 3GHz, OS 10.5.7, 16GB ...

Editor Day Rate NYC

What do you normally charge? Where it ends up really shouldn't matter. They are hiring you and your system. What is your rate? New type of campaign or no...they are hiring you for your skill and storytelling ability and technical expertise. That shouldn't waver...unless you are doing a favor for a friend or waving your fees for some higher cause (maybe trying to land a new client). But that can be poor practice as then the client...

Can I use BlackMagic avi?
Published (2009-12-01 02:21:00)
Blackmagic AVI doesn't really mean much. What actual codec are they transferring to. The wrapper is AVI and that is a nuisance but will work with a render. Blackmagic is a card I/O company that supports hundreds of different codecs. So the real question to ask is what codec, ( and @ what frame rate, timecode type and pixel aspect).

Footage Depth

As both Shane and Colin mentioned, FCP is not the ideal tool for the job, because it really requires rotoscoping and tracking to be done properly. So, that being said, doing a convincing job using only FCP is not terribly easy. However, if you are patient, you can do a reasonable job by using the techniques both of the other guys mentioned. See the tutorial below for a bit of help with the garbage mattes in FCP:...
