Well they should be. This has probably already been mentioned but it just occurred to me today as I lay thinking. I wasn't a huge fan of Avatar but I did watch a lot of the episodes, later on in the series it became apparent that water benders were extremely deadly in close combat because they could bend the water in the human body. Okay, that's great and all but what about earth benders, surely ...
I think it was said before. If this show was rated R, any bending style could be overpowered. Waterbending: Bloodbending/freezing somebodies blood. Airbending: Suffocating people, plus of course, hard to take away a bending element. Firebending: Really, no huge amount of utility, but a flamethrower is decent enough. Earthbending: No need for sublety, crush somebody with a boulder/smother them ...
I was in a discussion about the full potential brokenness of each element bending, which I thought of the question, "Would steambending be water or fire?" Steam is still water, with enough heat having entered it. Very similar to Icebending, just in the reverse process. What does this board think?
Either element could be broken, it just depends on the writing. For all intents and purposes, earth users could just make a pit under their enemies and crush them. Fire users could just summon fire in their body and kill them. Water users could control people, and Air users could suffocate people, or create enough pressure to crush them. Most shows won't do that though, because of either ...
Look at that Earth Kingdom general. He could probably kill Katara by submerging her in mud just as quickly as she could pull him to pieces with bloodbending. It's just occasionally clunky writing that makes any of these elements unbalanced in the shows' fights. Any fight where you see Katara or Toph instantly best the enemy with minimal effort is a fight just meant for filler and not meant to be...

"You know what I want for Christmas?"... "You know what I want for Christmas?" "Peas on earth?" "No, we already have peas on earth." Kids are too much fun.
