Drink-drive limit in Ireland to be cut to 50mg
The drink-drive limit in Ireland will be cut by the end of 2009, ministers announced today.
The current limit of 80mg alcohol per 100ml blood will be cut to 50mg, with a lower limit of 20mg for learner drivers and people who drive for work .
Hmmm. Might be a good time to offload the Guiness shares.
Good idea to have a lower limit for learners and working drivers, though why not just make it 20 across the board? It is here and many other countries.

Ban it completely and that will put just about every country pub out of
business, a sensible limit that allows for a drink is a more reasoned
approach in my opinion.

I totaly agree, also raise the legal drinking age to 21, this may stop some of the drink related problems.

Thats my local out of business ,the avaerage age in there when i last went in was around 16 .
Wernt like that when i was a regular in ...
Bunch of bl**dy Puritans.
Abolish the limit BUT, make alcohol consumptionan "exacerbating factor" if youn do any harm while drunk, say double the sober penalty.
The breathalyser has ruined many good country pubs, most that survive have to become restaurants to continue in business which defeats the ethos of a "proper pub"
It's just another stultifying excresence of the 'Elfansafty ...

And what happens when you have say 4 pints on a friday night, and sensibly get a taxi home, then drive to town in the morning and are found to have only 5mg in your breath and end up with a 12 month ban??
Are you...

What would help more (IMHO) is to ban drivers under 25 from the roads between 00:00 and 06:00. Obviously with some kind of permit system for shift workers etc. In our village there is a minibus that costs 5 per person to pick you up and drop you home at anytime during opening hours. Not just Ireland, the same thing...

I do remember when myself and the wife were in Ireland for a week , we were shocked at how many deaths were announced on the tv news each day .Plus loads of shrines at the roadside. We did see some rather dodgy driving manouvers as well So lets hope it does have some affect. Mark
