Thread: Dr. Zhivago was a sub-par soap opera dressed up like an epic

Started 1 month ago by Blood_Beach_1980
Even the late Maurice Jarre's fine music score couldn't save it. ...I expect to be roasted by Omar Sharif lovers now. My votes: http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=9422378

I've only seen it once but I like it. I did look through the rest of the thread, and I like this film as well as "Gandhi." I don't think a film is going to explore all of a person's life, we all know that. It was a compelling performance and for me as someone who's interseted in Chaplin without knowing a ton about him it was a good portrait. Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I ...

I think it's a very good film but it would have been better if they had been able to release the four hour version and not cram it all into two hours. Robert Downey Jr is fantastic in the role of Chaplin as is Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks. "It is my buisness to protect your majesty.... against all things."

I agree: what feels weird is that others are dismissive of films like Eyes Wide Shut for the oddest of reasons. 2001 is of course a brilliant film, but Eyes Wide Shut is by all means Kubrick's most complex and challenging masterpiece.

I think I've watched Last of the Mohicans four times in the last two years. It's one of my favorite films of the last quarter-century. Wonderful film. When we went to see it at the cinema, half the women in the audience were quivering messes, sobbing uncontrollably at the end. I was surprised by my own reaction to it. Must be the Blackfoot connection. Lucia

I find Harry Langdon funnier than Keaton, Lloyd or Chaplin. I prefer Woody Allen's "homages" to Bergman or Fellini better than either of the masters (I'd rather watch Stardust Memories than 8 1/2 or Deconstructing Harry than Wild Strawberries) Open the door for Mr. Muckle!!

Region free players are quite cheap and a lot of players can be made region free. I don't understand how anyone can call themselves a movie buff and not have a region free player. There's so much only available on one region or another at the moment. To be bound by just one region is to be shut off from a multitude of facets of cinema.

I do not like vampires. I associate NEW MOON with the 1940 MGM MacDonald/Eddy film operetta, not the title of a teen romance novel. Lorraine

Less, but it's still widespread (although I suspect there's more post-synch than you think in other parts of the world.) SexF1;or, SexF1;or, can you tell me where we're headin', Lincoln County Road or Armageddon?.

I did not read Krakauer's report, yet (the book is on order, though), and I wait until I've read it before I might announce Into the Wild my all time favourite film... Anyway, without having a comparison to the source material, I still understand your doubts. x93;So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because ...

Yeah, Doubleday was around 53rd, near the IND Fifth Avenue station, on the east side of Fifth. It was used to film scenes for THE BOYS IN THE BAND and THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT. Is Doubleday still in business as a publisher? Home base was in Garden City. "Don't worry. I'm not on the side of the saints yet."

Just arrived today, by way of New Zealand, apparently, after my account on the Barnes & Noble website failed to acknowledge its existence!!!! (I know, I know!) So, as its my last DVD purchase prior to finalising my Top 1,000, I'm looking to receive recommendations, or not as the case might be. If you list as must-sees, worth a look, or avoid,....or similar type categorisations it'll help decide for me as there's still...

a LA/NYC bubble where 60 percent of the American people were "Outside her Ken Given that most people hang out with their "own kind" (same age, same politics, same race, same interests, same education etc.), it's not unique and especially not in the environs of the NYC/LA axis. It does give me a giggle to hear celebrities (usually liberal I admit) talk about the American people and what they want and feel when,...

Tony Perkins and Tab Hunter (it never happened on the screen , only in real life; I'd love to have been a fly on the wall). First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win. Gandhi.

Seems I heard of Noel Madison -- no, that was Edward Norris. I do rekkinize Maurice Moskovitch, though, but confuse him with Leo McKern sometimes. We saw the back of Irving Pichel's head in "How Keen Was My Valium". (I had some of that Chateau Metz.Blind for a week!) Where'd you get the bugle, Din?

"I am not debating Edison's power in his time. He was indeed influential, and had many strings to pull, some in a nastier ways. I believe, the consipiracy theory that he was involved in Le Prince's disappearance still floats around, primarily since Edison had a lot to gain from that." I don't know much about that; most of what I know about Edison has to do with his role in film history and exposition history....

Good catch. I always love how precise that information is, even though little of it proves important. Listen to me bragging about my vagina! It's last week's PTA meeting all over again.
