Started 2 months ago by STTeam
ONE thing that always amazes me is how, at the drop of a hat, the topic of national service (NS) is brought up by those who want to justify that they 'deserve' more. Full Story

NS is good. Don't always ask what the country can give you, ask yourself what you can truly contribute to the country first and do what you say you're going to do... this applies to everyone on earth regardless of nationality.

Nobody was serving NS at that time....... but now 30,000 people does that every year. For 24 months, some 30 months then, one has to disrupt one's life, education accept an allowance lower that is much lower than the average wage rate at fast food restaurants for most. Then for the next 12 months having to disrupt career, social appointment etc for in-camp etc. Shouldn't these folks deserve a...

"ONE thing that always amazes me is how, at the drop of a hat, the topic of national service (NS) is brought up by those who want to justify that they 'deserve' more" - coz thats about the only one thing they have ever done (and will ever do) to contribute to this nation. NOT by choice either.

those who skive their way through national service will be afraid of tallying the scores. i reckon these are the same guys who are regular faces at maju & bedok camps. the greatest thing that can be said about their contribution is TIME. its like telling god at the gates of heaven that you deserve to go in solely because you attended sunday mass.

Oh man, our poor Changping is like Justice Bao. Skive = afraid of tallying the scores There is nothing to be afraid about. The point, why tally in the first place? First of all, as our ministers acknowledged, PRs are just guests, they have the rights to their own roots. They have the right to be citizens of their own countries. So same thing, Singaporeans have the right to stay in Singapore without fear of some silly contribution exams.

..enus.. ~ Those who've been through the real experience can speak up. Those who've never been a foreigner, expat, PR, member of the minority, governor, civil servant, RC member, etc can keep their opinions to themselves. Does that mean you disqualify your opining on ANY AND ALL issues you haven't had direct experience in? Meaning, we won't hear much from you from now on?

Changping, if you look at the mini-firestorm it's touched off, 'insensitive' might be a little mild here. I agree it is useless to speculate about his nationality but it's touched off the underlying resentment exacerbated by the economic downturn. It was simply a very foolish thing to grate on the nerves of one's hosts. It goes deeper than words. What does such a thoughtless remark reveal about the mentality of the...

Hi, Please leave the women alone, I don't want my daughters to serve NS. Why? I heard our neighbouring country, Malaysia, implements NS for women. This has resulted more molesting and raping cases in their camp. We are not ready for the NS women as well. Thanks!

''I just feel sad that you guys like to blame yr misfortunes to PR/Foreigners or gahment...'' This isn't what were were debating about anyway. If you think locals are like that, you are the one who is generalising here.
