Thread: Dont Walk/Walk

Started 1 month, 4 weeks ago by J-A-W-P
Non-residents (and many residents) are probably not aware of the quasi-controversy that bubbled up a while back. When the city completed its conversion from the traditional anglocentric signals at intersections and installed the international "Man and Hand" style, there was a certain degree of lamentation. Some saw this as a menacing harbinger of globalization, while others were simply ...

Hand + Man = wave while walking. Primarily used for visiting dignitaries and royalty.

I've often wanted to provide a name for the little man. Here are some of my favorite names for him: Pedestrian Pete Walkin' Willie Carl Crosswalk Donald Trump [he'll pay anything to attach his name to something] Please note that on no occasions have I ever found the Man using a hand held electronic device as he crosses the street. Guess that's why ...

"on no occasions have I ever found the Man using a hand held electronic device as he crosses the street." It's pretty to think that's 'cuz he's got a level of common sense sadly lacking these days. But probably has more to do with the fact that he doesn't actually have hands.

Perhaps he just has a headset. Oh wait--no decency-loving person with an ounce of self-awareness would use one of those. Whatever else can be said about that little guy, he's no tool.

JAWP nice to see you on my side of the river.

OMG - there was a woman walking down 7th Ave this morning screaming into one of those invisible phone devices, or she was just crazy.... I kept looking for the device! I cant wait for everyone to have Blackberries or Treos. It may be annoying walking behind them while they zig zag back and forth, but at least I wont have to hear loud business conversations; 1/2 of a fighting...

What continues to baffle me is that it's 2009 and people have been using cellphones for a while now, so why do so many folks not understand that holding a microphone near your mouth means that you can talker *quieter* than you normally would, not *louder*?

That's part of Sprint's new call anyone plan.... If you call another Sprint user you can talk softly.. For Verizon users you need to speak a little louder and for T Mobile users you have to scream at the top of your lungs.

Are you referring to the "little white man" ????

NYCforMe replied 1 month, 4 weeks ago
We noticed that a couple weeks ago, JAWP. Both the hand and the little walking man were displayed at the same time. I remember making a joke about it that maybe we should stop, then go, then stop, then go all the way across the street! Of course, I didn't do that; didn't want to drive the natives nuts while some crazy tourist tries to figure out the signals!
