Thread: Documents for Getting Indian visa first time after US naturalization
Started 4 months ago by Abhiski
I'll be getting an Indian visa the first time after my US naturalization. I'm reading at the San Francisco Indian consulate website that the visa type for me would be Entry visa (X-type) - for Indian origin person and that it can be done in a day.
The docs listed at the website are just the US passport, old Indian passport and filled out renunciation form. And then some photos.
I just ...

Unless your next trip to India is imminent, and you need a visa straight away, I suggest you don't bother with a visa at all.
As a former Indian citizen, you are entitled to apply for OCI status - and ...
Unfortunately, I need to go to India within 2 weeks and OCI takes a month.
I do need a visa. I plan to apply for OCI in US and then travel on the Indian visa - or just get the Indian visa and then get the OCI in India.
Either way I'll need a visa this one time :-(
If it's only a stopgap visa for this trip until you get OCI, I'd go for a six months tourist visa, rather than paying the higher fees for an entry visa.
While you may be entitled to an entry visa, that doesn't mean you're not eligible for an ordinary tourist visa.
Actually I am already working in a US based company for which I'll be working from the Indian office, while in India. Technically I would be wrong to apply for a tourist visa.
The Entry/X visa type description says that it's for people of Indian origin who are coming to India for being with family, business, etc., which is why I'm currently in India.

I plan to apply for OCI the day I land here. I would have already registered online for it.
If it makes a big difference, I would not work until the few weeks it takes for me to get the OCI stamp. Business/employment visa just for this duration would be too much trouble.
However, it would still rather get the X/Entry visa instead of visitor visa because I read someone having trouble ...

It might have helped if you had explained that instead of drip feeding information and ending up with the wrong advice!

If you are working, you need an employment visa, not a business visa. If you are not working until your OCI status comes through, you can travel on a tourist visa, or entry visa ...
OCI processing & issue times vary a lot here among the consulates. I don't know how long it takes to get one in India or how much variation there is among different offices, but I'd count on at least 2 months to get OCI while in India. The type of visa (entry vs tourist) would depends on how soon you need to work prior to that.
