Thread: Do you think parents disrespect the cultural or..

I was thinking this to myself. This especially only seems to happen in America. People here a foreign name on a baby and think "ooh that's so cute, i'll name my daughter that when she's born". But then they don't actually search the name to learn more about it.
For example, if you're gonna use a Russian name on your child, you should at least respect the name your giving your daughter as much...
I'd agree except that I'd change "disrespect" to "act in ignorance of" in most cases, which is still sad. Something as important as naming a child ought to be done with care, and I think there are people out there who never take a few minutes to look into a name's meaning/ origin/ pronunciation or if they do then say, "I don't care about ___. I just like the way it looks/ sounds/ etc."
I agree...somewhat. I think that people should definitely look up the origins of a name (and the meaning) before using it. I personally wouldn't use something that I found out means something horribly negative and I would definitely think before naming my daughter a boy's name.
On the other hand, I don't think taking a foreign name and using it is a disrespectful intention. Just because ...
I do think it's important to know and understand the origins of a name. Although I do disagree with the Sasha thing- Sasha can be a nickname for Alexandra too.
I don't know that disrespect is the word that I would use, unless it is unintended due to lack of knowlege or research. Some people just choose a word that they think sounds pretty or exotic. Foolish or not well considered, probably. I don't see the examples that you have cited as offensive or disrespectful...I have a few examples of my own...
I know a woman who named her daughter "Melee...
Some people don't factor the cultural origins of name into their decision. You may think its important, but to some, they couldn't care less where the name came from. That doesn't necessarily mean their being disrespectful. There isn't a rule book to naming your child. For me, If I really like a name, the cultural origin of the name really isn't going to matter, well unless the name means ass...
I do think it's possible to use a name disrespectfully. I wouldn't use Cohen for my gentile child's first name, for instance.
I don't care too much about whether people mix and match gendered names honestly. I assume the parents are often ignorant about a name's origins if it's from a different culture or language. (My Russian friend and her family think female Mishas are pretty funny.) But ...
