Thread: Do you play "exactly" as it was written...?
Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by toddkuen
Personally I play in a lot of duo situations where it would be impossible to ever cover the song as originally recorded, i.e., horn/flute/sax/piano and guitar against, say, a three piece rock original.
I also play in a band with one guy who "has to learn it exactly" before he can do anything else (and I know there are others here that feel this way as well).
So who here buys the sheet ...
In my party rock band, we're closer to "note for note", but not zealots. Can't afford to be zealots - too many parts to cover with one guitar, bass and drums.
However, the drummer and I (bass) do our best to lift off the parts from the original record. The guitarist does an amalgamation of the other bits.
If we were doing a blues or jazz cover band, or covering a narrow time period of...
I think it's pretty important that you try and figure out what the original artist was doing as closely as possible. I really always try and figure out that "thing" - whatever it may be - that makes a particular part "pop." Theres usually something - some unique voicing, a quick bend or slide - just some little thing that gives those memorable parts their particular flavor. I saw a band a ...
There are two different questions.
Should you learn the part exactly as recorded?
Should you play the part exactly as recorded?
Should you learn the part exactly as recorded?
To have the skill to actually hear what what is happening in a player's part, then learn to transfer that to your hands with competency, that's an important part of being a musician. Jazz guys ...
Never been a stickler for doing it just like the record. The number of songs that I've learned before ever hearing the recording is amazing. If you were doing Respect, would you do the Areatha Franklin version or Otis Redding? Very different versions of Otis's song.
It's just a song. Unless there is something that really moves me about a
certain arrangement, I dn't worry about recreating it. Some tunes have
signature licks or arrangement tricks without which they would suffer. I'll
work those out. If a lyric is clumsy grammatically or does'nt scan to my
mind, I have no prob changing it. Makes it easier to remember. I think it's
more important to understand ...
My only rule:
Just do the damn thing JUSTICE.
That means having an understanding and appreciation for the aspects of the song that make it cook.
There's a hella lot more to music than just the notes.
There's tone, phrasing, rhythmic feel and tempo....

If you want it "exact" you need to do it by ear.

^^Agreed
My band always changed the arrangements. Rather than stick to the concept of the original recorded song, we attempted to stick with the band's concept and style. Mostly, we turned each song into a punk-rock rave up, because that's what we do.
Our philosophy was that fans came to see us and our music. Those who want it to sound like the orginal can stay home and pop in a CD.
