After wearing glasses for short sightedness for 25 plus years, I've just been prescribed progressive lenses (oh the joys of being over 40!) I'm trying to decide whether I should also get Transitions lenses instead of clip on sunglasses (or a separate pair of prescription sunglasses). I've read a lot of complaints about Transition lenses but my Optometrist assures me that they're much ...
I have had them and liked them..but since I only wear my glasses in the evening, I don't have them any longer..and they aren't effective for driving...clip ons will work for that..My DH has always gets them..he would have never bothered with sunglasses..hey...I'm surprised he wears a wedding ring!
Hello outwest, some time back I ordered transition lenses. I was assure I could return them if they didnt work for me. I found they remained too darkish inside and not dark enough outside. I returned them and got regular lenses and a pair of very dark lense prescription sunglasses.
That was about seven years ago however so maybe they have improved but I personally wouldn't order them ...
Thanks for your replies. That's what I've heard--that they don't get dark enough and it takes too long for them to lighten. I wear my glasses all the time and I'm particularly bad at remembering to take my clip ons with me--I don't drive, so that's not an issue.
I wear progressives with transition lenses. I like the transitions when I go outside and don't have my sunglasses handy. I feel that it was worth the expense. My DH is in the same situation and agrees.
I had Transitions lenses several years ago and had the same issues LoveItaly did. I got them again this year and they are truly much improved -- they darken pretty quickly and lighten up much faster than they used to. You still need sunglasses for the beach or really bright bright sunlight.
I've had them for years, and have been fine with them. I don't like the clipons because I invariably break them, lose them, something. It does take a couple seconds to darken up, but it works fine, even in the Florida sun
Someone told me the other day that the transitions have improved a lot recently. When I drive into Seattle, which is frequently, I have to drive through two tunnels. I've always wondered how those transitions do in a tunnel. I use clip-ons because I'd heard of the slow transitions. They're cheap, so if I lose them it doesn't cost much to replace them (under $15). (It's easy to lose sunglasses...
I tried progressives last year and couldn't tolerate the weirdness of the vision. I kept them for one week.
I had transition lenses many years ago and hated them. My son now has them and he said he would never get them again.
I have separate sunglasses so I can have the lenses darker.
I had transitions years ago. At that time they were only available if you got glass lenses. Do they make them in the plastic/polycarbonate (or whatever they are these days) now?
I like mine fine..but in a climate like Arizona where you get hot bright light all day, might not do..Here in Seattle, our light is mostly filtered and soft...they sure work for me.
Thanks for all the replies--yes, progressives are because I need three prescriptions--reading, computer, and distance. I'm leaning towards getting the Transitions because at $99 it's cheaper than custom clip ons or separate sunglasses and I probably spent the vast majority of this summer just squinting (because I always forget my clipons). I'm nervous about the progressive lenses but I think it's just a matter of sticking...
I use mine for driving too, just fine. since I got glasses 'late in life' my very first pair of glasses were progressives, so those are the only kind I know.
Hi Gail, I know so many people that wear progressive lenses that probably mine were not made properly. I tried them for over two weeks. I am not going to get new glasses until it is time to have my cataract operations, whenever that will be, and I will check out progressive lenses again, well as long as I can return them if they don't work for me. Suze, no doubt the transition lenses have improved over the years. It is sure great to have...
elberko, that would be a positive for me, as I can't stand driving with sunglasses on--I feel as if my vision is compromised. (Same issue driving at night.) I normally wear contacts, but my glasses are progressive and I love them (but hate wearing glasses). My issue with transitional lenses is that they never looked completely clear when inside...there was always a strange, and IMHO, unattractive, tint to them inside. Has that changed?
I got new glasses this summer. I have a strong bi-focal prescription (no line). My "daily" glasses have clip-ons, which I prefer. My "travel" glasses have transition lenses. I don't like the length of time it takes them to change. I ordered the glasses with transition lenses from an on-line store. They were much cheaper and the prescription is just fine.
I've had transition lenses for 2 years. I find the lenses do darken inside, in fact I just went to look in the mirror as I'm in a bright room, and my lenses are slightly shaded. However, having them darken when I am inside is a look I don't really care for. Mine also darken slightly in the car, but if I'm heading into the sun I use clip-ons. I like them for traveling, days when I'm running errands in and out of doors....
