Thread: Do You Have Any Ideas for Homemade Christmas Ornaments?
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by TeacherSandra
So, does anyone have any ideas what you're going to have your students make this year??
I'm still thinking about doing a "star" out of popsicle sticks and adding a picture of the student. Not extraordinary, but I'm not very creative.
I found a box of foam ornaments that the kids stick together at Michael's for only $5 for a box of 24. Normally I don't do pre-fab stuff, but this was a deal too good to pass up!

I never did pre-fab stuff either, but its a really good way to get kids to learn how to follow ...
I've done all of these over the years:
Fill clear plastic ornaments with drips of paint and tilt so the paint swirls. Or, dribble in glue and then glitter. Of course, the kids mostly want to do the glitter type.
Decorate clear glass votive candle holders with glass paint. You can make them look like stained glass windows if you have stained glass paint (it has a thick black type for ...
I've made Paint stick snowmen. They are the perfect shape. You paint the top black for the hat and the rest white. Draw on the face and buttons (or glue real buttons on) with markers and hot glue a ribbon on the back to hang on the tree.
One year, my mother and I made Santa faces on wooden spoons. They came out quite cute. I can't remember if we just painted the hats, or had real felt. The faces were painted and we used dimensional white paint with sparkles for the beard. We tied them with red gingham ribbon and actually sold some.
I don't know what grade you are teaching, but one year my kids' classes made Christmas ornaments out of old puzzles. The teachers sent home a note asking for donations of old puzzles (pieces missing, etc). You can also get them at a thrift store for next to nothing. Some of the pieces that had Christmas colors weren't painted, but the others were spray painted in Christmas type colors - red, ...
When I was in grade school, one of the projects we made at church in our "advent workshop" every year (stations with gobs of actiities) used those metal juice lids. We had a dotted design and used a hammer and nail to punch the holes to make a design. We still have a ton of them at home that my brother and I made. You can also use the juice lids with glitter and glue to maek special designs....
I have each child make a bag of ornament 5-6, and attach a poem to the bag that says something about hang it on the tree and give them to me to start my tree when I am older.

I do it a lot now that I have a reading class that is lower functioning.

It can get pricey unless you catch things on sale, but I remember one year making an ornament out of a styrafoam ball and sequins. You take a styrafoam ball and attach sequins all over it with straight pins. Overlap the edges of the sequins so none of the styrafoam shows through. You can attach a looped ribbon to the top in the same way. The preparation is not too bad (aside from finding the items on sale,) it keeps them busy for a good hour...
