I read years ago that they felt that Swan Lake was somehow too similar to Little Mermaid, and when The Swan Princess was produced it was sort of the nail in the coffin.

Some info I found (I'm not finding too much; unfortunately, the Internet wasn't as popular back then as it is now!): http://www.mouseplanet.com/8967/Forgotten_Tales_of _Disney_History Quote: More recent unmade projects appeared in the Los Angeles Daily News of July 26, 1992: “At a press preview for Disney’s Aladdin, Disney studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ...

I would of been pretty cool if Disney made the movie...

Plus Lion King is similar to Bambi and that didn't get canceled. I like the character a lot myself. If I remember right, it was something I read from an animation magazine...

They also worked on Aida, after the Lion King. A project that later got abandoned but did result into the musical version with the music by Elton John and Tim Rice.

Wouldn't surprise me if Richard Rich had indeed originally tried to green-light the project at Disney, but later decided to go solo. I actually love "The Swan Princess" (though the two sequels suffer from being average Saturday morning-quality cartoon affairs). The soundtrack is really fun, too.
