i have only been back on a mtb for 3 months after a 10 year break and am hooked again. i got a used 5 spot with some nice speck and i am loving how well it climbs and how sure footed and confidence inspiring it is. I went for a blast with the guys from work, only problem was the torrential rain and the eye popping wind, we climbed 1700 feet in 16 miles (i need to work on my fitness ouch my poor ...

Yeah, you're going to need a crank puller to get those cranks off. Secondly its gonna Seem wrong, rid of them shock boots. They do way more damage than help. They trap Dirt then the dirt is like sandpaper. Circa 1990......

Those look like self-extracting crank bolts - which means you should not need a puller. The outer section/cap of the bolt is threaded into the arm itself, so as you rotate the center bolt (loosen it), it presses against that cap and should pull the arm off the spindle. If it's not, you won't hurt anything by trying.

Yeah, you're going to need a crank puller to get those cranks off. Secondly its gonna Seem wrong, rid of them shock boots. They do way more damage than help. They trap Dirt then the dirt is like sandpaper. Circa 1990......
