Not sure if it qualifies as doom or not but what I've heard so far was pretty fucking good. Lots of guitar harmonies, good production. I'd like to hear more sung(rather than screaming) vocals but still interesting stuff.
Musically, Baroness are freaking AWESOME. BUt I agree about the vocals. I dug the first two EPs a lot more. From what I have heard, I also prefer The Red Album over this one but I have only listened to a few songs. They seemed more "rockish" if that makes sense.
Butch knows how I feel about this album. It ranks as one of my favorites, if not my favorites of 2009. I have been into these guys for a few years, but this album surpassed all my expectations. I like the vocals--I think they fit the music. Smoother vocals would have killed the chaotic and powerful nature of the music. And the riffs are fucking killer. It's the first complete record I've ...
I agree with both Kevron & Butch. A contridiction. Yeah kinda. I'm with Butch. I HATE the vocals. But i'm also with Kevron on the part about Pete Adams addition to this band.
Maybe not the best comparison to make, But as much as i LOVE early Cathedral. To this day i still HATE Lee Dorrian's vocal delivery on "Forest". I'm not a King Diamond fan either. But I love the music of Mercyful Fate.

Anyways, I was just poking fun, but the seed of truth is that a metal album with out great riffs is bland, but an album can be great without great vocals. Against Nature anyone?
I agree about "great vocals" being subjective. There are singers who can't carry a tune in a bucket that I still like/respect for various reasons like Lars Goran Petrov (powerful voice, tons of conviction in it...one of the few cats to come from the death metal side of things that I really like), Tom Warrior, Lemmy, Tom Araya, Lee Dorrian....Rob Zombie (not so much his vocal quality tonally but what he can do with it...
Relistening and, yea, the music definitely KILLER and more hooks than a tacklebox. They have always been one of them bands while listening Id laugh out loud, jaw dropped, and wonder "did I just hear that?!" I'll get myself used to the vocal delivery.
What constitutes "great" and "shitty" vocals is entirely subjective. I couldn't imagine "clean" vocals on this album. I think it would ruin the chaos and power of the music. I think it's a perfect fit. I generally prefer clean vocals, but sometimes gruffer vocal styles are the perfect fit. This works here. I'm a firm believer in the strength of the vocals. I cannot stand a...

I saw they band for the very first time last year after Pete gave me an invite to come out to see them in Columbus, Ohio. At this point i wasn't a big fan at Pete had just joined. I'd heard the "Red" album, liked the music, but as mentioned did care for the vocals. They band is very impressive Live and very similar to Valkyrie Live in certain ways. Mostly the dual guitar work and dual vocal work. The rthythm...
