Thread: Diff Locks - seperate front and rear actuation

Started 1 month ago by Iain_Unimog
Hi all, in rebuilding my diff locks I'm wondering about re-doing the plumbing to provide a system similar to most 4x4 equipped with diff locks. I would like to be able to have the front or the rear ( or both locked) independently. The current system locks both front and rear - which will make it difficult to do tight turns. I'm not sure if Unimog's have a centre diff - or where just ...

I used some 12 volt air solenoids from Mcmaster Carr, they were less than $20 each. The stock handle operates the rear locker now, the switch for the front locker is a pushbutton on that shifter handle. Took less than an hour to do.

Really interesting stuff. Been wanting to do that. Make sure to post pics as ill be copying you. I checked the solenoids from McMaster and was wondering what size to use, 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2" ?

I recall that the valves are a cast plastic housing, and they have a 1/8npt thread, use some nylon 1/8npt to 3/16 hose barb fittings to adapt to rubber hose. I tapped into the line that supplies pressure to the stock diff lock switch to supply the solenoid, and moved the hose that connects the front axle to the stock switch to the solenoid. This allows me to engage the front without the back ...

No centre diff on unimog ( the old ) Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting if your lockers are working with air , you need just 2 simple valves if is the old style take a look here a very good patent Rocky Mountain Moggers - Tech Tip #16 - Mario Larouche's Diff lock shifter split

Hi, Mogies, I'd like to do this also, but would much prefer to keep any electric solenoids out of the picture, has anyone here done this with simple manual valves. Years ago my 75 power wagon had a solenoid to switch fuel tanks, it drove me nuts trying to figure why my truck would die sporadically, and start sporadically with plenty of fuel in both tanks. Finally ripped out the solenoid, ...

George, I actually searched for a few minutes to find a link to one of my own threads about this, and it didn't come up. So I posted the part# again. Back into my hole.

Tim, you could easily do the same thing with some mini 1/4 turn full port valves to turn the air on and off. I agree, simplicity has it's appeal. I wanted the pushbutton on the OEM lever, so I went with the solenoid valve. Either way, nice mod for cheap.

Thanks esde, I thought that would work fine, just was wondering how others might have done it. I don't have the ease of just going out to look at my Mog to see how it might work. My Mog is in Oregon & I'm in Hawaii for the time being. Also most the people on this board are very good mechanically,(to put it lightly) so it would be interesting to see the specifics from people who have been there done that. I seem to remember...

Wow im surprised, stupid Q but where does it connect too? any photos by chance? I looked on my build sheet and it wasn't listed so I assume I don't have it. but it seems to rain a lot in Washington so it would be nice to have just incase I ford into some deep water. David
