Thread: Diesel Particulate Filter manual regeneration

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by dve_herts_uk
Can anyone advise how to force a manual regeneration of the Diesel Particle Filter on a 1.9Tid(150)? Do I need a Tech-II to do this? Can any of the other OBD2 readers on eBay be used? My car went into limp mode with error codes for 'EGR valve' and 'air intake leak'. My main dealer diagnosed a blocked DPF. They replaced the EGR valve and forced a manual DPF regeneration. It is a model ...

Tech 2 is the only way I'm affraid. Try giving the car a good run once a week to give it chance to do it itself. Great chance to take the wife out lol

Thanks Merv for your advice. I do mainly motorway driving, so thought the DPF would have plenty of opportunity to regenerated itself. However the car is a 6 speed automatic and rarely gets above 2500 rpm. At 70 (ish) mph it is only at around 2000 rpm. The problem occured when I was on a 10 mile stretch of 50 mph avg spd chk roadworks on the M25! Maybe I need to put my foot down ...

Hi I had an error code indicating particle filter problems in 2007, but did nothing other than change, clean and replace the EGR valve with a spare every few months, and the problem seems to rectify itself. I also have a 6 speed auto box. Usually I communte 20 mins at a regular 30/40mph with the odd longer motorway journey of <100 miles. The car only seems to go into Limp Home mode ...

No luck yet with teh regeneration. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree... However, here's a question - how and when does the particle filter regenerate with the low revs from Auto boxes? Richard

dve_herts_uk replied 3 months, 1 week ago
Most of my motoring is in 'cruise control' on the motorway with the revs just below 2000. I have started putting the auto box into manual and dropping down a gear for 10 minutes or so, every few hundred miles, to give the DPF a chance to regenerate. It would be good to know what driving conditions the ECU looks for, before starting a regeneration. Does anyone out there know? Dave...

It would be even better if it didn't bloody block full stop!!! For a supposedly 'premium' vehicle I do not expect to have to be faffing about driving around motorways ensuring I am maintaining certain rev levels just to prevent it all going tits up. It is ridiculous and clearly the design of the DPF or the regeneration system is flawed - it would be better if they just gave you an option on...

Good point. R

EGR valves, particle filters, etc - all designed to reduce emissions, increase efficiency and protect the environment. I wonder how much energy and materials are needed, and how much pollution and waste products are generated in making all these parts, which fail and need replacing... Welshtom's got me going now! Must find calming ale...

........and to regeneate the DPF the car burns extra fuel! Not a very green thing to do! Is the Shell V-power diesel any cleaner - ie does it block the DPF less? Dave
