Thread: Did they really recruit soldiers for the civil war right from the docks?

They show Irish immigrants being recruited for the war, right after they have barely left the ships? Did this really happen? "I won't say a single solitary slovo unless I have my lawyer here. I know the law, you bastards"

As someone with a masters degree in 19th Century American History, I'm going to guess that the way it was presented was a bit of an exaggeration. However, huge, and I mean HUGE, amounts of immigrants (mostly Germans and Irish) fought for the Union during the war. So they were obviously recruited somehow, but it is unlikely that they were waiting at the docks like it was portrayed in the film.

Thank you! This would be a good argument to drop the awkward affirmative action system plaguing the society of USA. Today there are many, who are descendants to those brave Irish and German immigrants, that fought to abolish slavery (and to stop the separatists if we want to stay unbiased), yet to this day for some reason they are still being held responsible for things their ancestors were never...

Abolising slavery was not the main goal of the civil war, just an extra kick in the face to the south. Stewart/Colbert 08'!!!!!!
