Umm yeah, a group of violent men made him get the old man to open the door so they could rob the place. Very few people under that kind of duress would try to play hero. Its not a sign of cowardice. They weren't all that violent. Even a token show of defiance on the kid's part would have been enough to gain him some audience/my sympathy but he gave nothing, he knew they meant harm to the weak and kindly old man but he just lead them...

Ya, he was totally dumpy. They could have at least picked someone who looked good... or was fit, or something.

I liked Michael Angarano and I liked his character. Without Jason, the movie would have been pointless; no character development.

No, there was no reason for Jason to be the chosen one, other than Hollywood decided to put some white kid fanboy in an epic Asian story. If Hollywood was smart, the least they could have done was what was done with The Neverending Story, had the white kid read a story about the Monkey King with the main character an Asian kid from a Asian tribe, bu no Hollywood had to go the racist route.
