Thread: Death of a Tiger.

... Well, she flew well for MANY flights, gained a few grams here and there from tweaks and glue, but flew like a champ! Sunday morning was a cool one, no wind, just hawks high above looking for breakfast. I launched and headed out and up and found thermals kicking hard enough to throttle back a bit and ride them up higher, this was turning out to be a great flight. The hawks came ...

Great story TM. Hate to read you lost the moth though.

I like the photo!!! Too bad you lost the plane. Maybe there is something like bug repellent, but for birds, and you can spray it all over the plane. I wish...

Neat story, sorry to hear of the loss but hey, if your going to go down, might as well be in a blaze of glory!

Sorry for your lost. We got to understand that birds are birds. The Hawk are territorial by nature. If it sense there is a threat, it will attack ...be it a beast or a RC plane. I hope you can rebuilt or get a new Tiger moth. Its a great and nice plane. Cheers

Yes, they own the space up there! I have had minor problems with the hawks, and no problems with the vultures. All of them usually check out the sailplanes when I have them up. The vultures will hang with me for a while then they get bored! This was the first time I actually had a Hawk strike. The family of the "coopers" have been in the area for years, so they are use to seeing my stuff up...

It's never fun to lose a plane, but that's a much, much better way to do it than pilot error or mechanical failure. It makes for a great story, too.

Sorry to hear but like aramid said, it wasn't your fault, I found out it isn't just the birds of prey that may attack us, I have a flying wing glider called The little plank, the wing is 56" x 13", I guess to a little birds brain this thing looks like a hawk or similar, About 30 small song birds were following my plane, and every 30-45 seconds, 2-3 of them would climb a little higher and ...

When I first started flying I had a Zagi-Fixx. One day a couple of small birds tried a similar tactic, presumably to scare off the "big bird". The cool part of that incident was that I had an Aiptek PenCam running in video ( 8 fps ) mode on board at the time. There are about 3 or 4 frames in the video where an odd-shaped black object appears in the field of view for a single frame as one of ...

I've only had one aggressive confrontation with a hawk and my Pico Tiger Moth at our flying site, and we see some impressive hawks out there. Fortunately, I was able to "dodge the dive" and make it a point to not "challenge" the hawks. The buzzards.......well.......they are almost considered fair game. If you can make them flap their wings, it's considered a hit. The crows are scared stiff of...

Well, I had a 350C on the nose, and yes, I could go Vert for a second or so, also could have dived. BUT, this plane had over 50 hours of flight time, more added glue and tweeks which has added way to many ounces, so I was a little limited as to what escape route I could take. I elected to turn downwind and get out of his zone, just so happens...it was a young hawk who was looking to get something!! These young hawks are so bold, I have seen...
