Go to the Telegraph for world news, and the local paper for weather. It is quite sickening when you really think about it.

The OP is acting as a consumer. If he's not pleased, he'll complain. Enough people join him, and the corporations will relent and start dishing out real news.

Dear Redditor, What? We do hard news all the time. Like that time that Obama won that tight victory about politics, and it was really close but he pulled it out in the end, or how all those people were yelling about that politics thing, and the videotape was really top quality. I mean, it's not all soft news about what Paris Hilton is wearing. Sometimes it's hard news about what Hillary ...

For the most part, they give the masses what they want. If they stop with the infotainment "Brad & Jennifer had another baby" bullshit, their ratings drop.

"No, enough people will stop watching." No company has ever went bankrupt underestimating the stupidity of the public. Most people would rather be entertained than told the truth.

No one said anything about bankruptcy. Programs will change their programming to meet public demand. Much like they've done since they started. It wasn't until very recent certain programs were calling out other programs for their false or misleading information. The more people demand truthful reporting (by watching programs such as the Daily Show) the less popular your a-typical reporting program will become. No one is going...

You have a point there, if a large majority of Americans cared about more in-depth news coverage then the news agencies would start having better coverage of important news events. As it stands, they don't really have a reason to go through all that hard work. It's about profits, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I would also like to thank BBC America for providing us in the USA with a nightly newscast that isn't shameful.
