I can't remember for sure if there was a chess set but there could have been and the bodies sitting at a table sounds alot like a "Quincy" episode called "No Way To Treat A Body":

Possibly an American TV movie of the 70s or early 80s. All i remember is some kind of mystery and subsequent investigation which leads to somebody going through a little-used door and up to the loft of a house, where they find a dead person (or possibly 2) covered in cobwebs and sat at a table with a chess set.
