I'm no tailor, so a personal modification just isn't going to work, but I'd like to find a good quality jacket and waistcoat for day-wear. Can
anyone recommend a good 'off-the-shelf' (I guess) that is smart but won't require a remortgage?
There are some imported PCs that come in at just under £100 - I just wish they'd do day wear too.
Any ideas please?
Thanks, Graham.
'Good quality' and 'cheap' just don't come along together I'm afraid.
Ebay often has imported stuff - I was lucky enough to pick up a charcoal grey Argyll jacket for £9.99 which is perfectly acceptable for most purposes - and
'quality' items are often on offer if you are lucky enough to spot what you are looking for in your size.

I agree with you Graham. I wish for a Argyle jacket and especially one in
tweed or similar. But to pay £ 200 or more for such a jacket is not an
option for me. I have to do with a regular tweed blazer and vest for the
time being.
I love the old adage, "You can have any two of price, quality, or service." That's just the way it is. Quality at a fair price is value.
I'm not an off the rack size so had my two argyles and PC/waistcoat made-to-measure through my kiltmaker (Kathy Lare) by Lochcarron. Lochcarron sent
swatches for me to see the fabric and colors (no cost). My girlfriend measured me to Kathy's ...
I wear a kilt almost always & a have several "Day Jackets" But like you, I am restricted in "spendable $$$$"
Here is how I have been able to "attire" myself.
1. Kilt Forum's "for sale sections" Here is a picture of one I recently got for $150.00 (shipped )
2. The majority of my jackets are "conversions" Like you I am NOT a tailor. Can not hardly sew a button ) but here is what has ...
Hello All,
Just a few observations. Graham, where do you live? Hard to advise, when I don't know where you are.
I am a great believer in eBay. I have bought great Argyles for next
to nothing from eBay.
It is definitely worth buying a worn-out Argyle just to use as a pattern. Cheap jackets from charity shops are great
- you don't have to like the fabric or the colour - you ...

I was lucky enough to find a charcoal tweed jacket at Hector Russell on an ex rental sale, this jacket is so versatile that I even wore it for my wedding. Here
is a photo of it
I have also found daywear jackets at local tartan shops on consignment, on ebay and for sale on kilt forums, my only suggestion is to keep your eyes open. For
