Thread: DIY portable power for Dynalite packs (...

Started 2 months, 3 weeks ago by Randy Khayman
Hi gurus, I searched internet for answers but most only deal with monolights so here's my question: I had a samlex 300 from before when I was still using ABs and I have upgraded to the dynalite pack and head system, namely 2 MP1000s. If I am only using 1 pack, will the samlex 300 cut it? Other than slow recycle, are there any danger at all using a lower wattage inverter? If I have to upgrade, ...

What is the difference between a 12v and a 24v inverter? Any obvious advantage of 1 over the other? Thanks in advance.

BTW 12v and 24v rely on different input voltages. Thats ...

Using a 24v inverter allows you to use thinner wire gauges throughout your battery-inverter system. It's like using 200 pounds of pressure in a water line instead of 100 -- you can deliver a greater amount of water (more power) using a line of exactly the same cross-...

you do know that the first recommendation uses a modified sine waves which is not recommended for flash right? The second thread eventual leads to the first solution which is a moot point and the 3rd is not exactly an option financially. Lets just say that I have found a solution as far as what to buy but I just lack the knowledge to get "how much", in this case what sort of wattage is ...

The first reccomendation pointed to a page further down the thread than where I wanted it to go. The OP of that thread built his own setup and I believe there was a discussion about power requirements.

I have actually saw that thread but it did not quite answer my questions. He built a DIY for the Zeus 2500 and uses a samlex 600W inverter. I have a 300W inverter with 2 1000ws packs, and since I am engineering challenged, I have no idea how to draw the comparisons, nor even know if the 300w inverter would cut it or should I get a higher wattage one, and if so, how much. Again, I want to ...

Yes, the 1000W continuous / 2000W peak inverter will power 2 x 1000 Ws packs safely. There's no advantage in 24V batteries over 12V. As the 12V are the most popular their prices are comparatively lower than 24V models. When you look at the price for a 1000W inverter let me ask why not considering the Tronic Explorer XT? www.innovatronix.com/detailpage.asp?productid=363& categoryid=42

I did until I saw the specs for the batteries. Like the vaabondII, it seems more suited for small monolights than 1000ws packs running several heads. But please correct me if I am wrong. I have a 12v 55aH battery, and I believe getting a similar priced inverter will ultimately give me better mileage? Anyway, so you are saying that getting a 1000w inverter will safely and effificently drive 2 ...

Inverters for flashes have to be designed to tolerate the voltage drop that occurs in the first milliseconds of recharging. Samlex and similar tend to shut off in this instance ("voltage drop shut-off") what can only be bypassed by using a unit with a higher *peak* wattage. The price of such Samlex SK1000-112 is about $ 400, what takes me to the ExplorerXT. Though it's peak power is just 1200W it safely powers up to 2000 Ws...
