Thread: Cuban bassist Cachao dies; mambo pioneer

Started 1 month, 4 weeks ago by Rundquist
I was going through some old threads and came upon this. Cachao is every bit as important to the music world as someone like Charlie Parker. It's a shame that more people around here apparently don't know much about his music (judging from the lack of response to the thread) . Everyone should do themselves a favor and check him out. He invented the mambo (well, him or Arsenio Rodriquez). Cheers...

As long as I'm at it..., Manny Oquendo died earlier this year. If I had to pick what my favorite band of of all time was, it would be hard, but I'd probably choose Manny Oquendo & Conjunto Libre. On top of that, Manny played on some of my other favorite records of all time with Eddie Palmieri and La Perfecta. Check him out. http://www.lpmusic.com/The_LP_Family.../oquendo1.h tml

Cachao was indeed an amazing basist. Most anyone into Cuban music will know who he is. Many Cuban masters of his generation died between 2003 and 2008. Mongo Santamaria, Carlos Valdez, and Ruben Gonzalez come to mind. There were many others too. It's the end of a generation. But their music and heart will live on through recordings and their immense influence on younger players.
