My patrol car overdrive went to neutral, no warning , no slippage, going slow even. It pulls fine in third.
They will replace it, no problem but it's kind of odd to me.
Is that the way they fail, just all of a sudden like?
That's how mine went out. I was hauling down the X-way in the ol' Vic, and then I was coasting down the X-way in the ol' Vic. I was lucky enough to find a good used tranny ... there aren't too many of those around for the Vics, AFAIK.
Be glad only O-drive went out. My tranny went all neutral. Pulled into the lot just fine, got back in and NOTHING--park or neutral.
I will say that Ford did put a good warranty on their replacement trannies.

Who told you that?
The AOD/4R70W is one of the most common and widely-used transmissions in the world. It was used on nearly every automatic RWD Ford product made for almost 30 ...
Every parts place I called when my second Vic threw its tranny.
I couldn't find a used one anywhere. I was told that so many go bad, that finding a good used one is a stroke of luck 'cause they all get snapped up.
Hey, I'm not claiming to be an expert here.
Some of the problems with finding tranny's are which year car they are for. I had a 95 Vic and the tranny was a 95 only part. So if you are out of luck, thats the way it is.
I cant say about an AOD but I have seen the inside of an E4OD and its the
biggest POS I ever worked on , My C4 had about 4 times the clutch material
per clutch pack than the E40D does and its supposed to be heavy duty . My
C4 was behind a six pack in a mustang , cant get much lighter duty than
that . Lock up converters are also extreamly light duty and usally self
destruct everything when they go...

happened to me too on my old '95 several years ago. it had nearly 150k on the clock when it happened. our shop told me that soemthing goes wrong with the o/d switch and fools the tranny into knowing what gear its in. not sure how valid that is, but it didnt take long to fix it and i dont think they took the trans out. never mind i had one of the headlights being held in place with duct tape. sometimes govt repair shops like shortcuts! on...

I have got a 2002 Ford Ranger 4WD with a 4 speed automatic and 3.0L V-6 with 238,XXX miles on it. What kind of transmission is in mine? I too drive a Crown Vic for a living and in the past ten years I've only been stranded by overheating. Of course my Supervisor states that the probability of me being stranded at all is remote since I rarely ever put the car into drive.
