Thread: Credit card scam - Beware!

Started 3 weeks, 4 days ago by Nanuuk
I received a call from 905-345-4321 yesterday claiming to be the Visa legal department wanting to verify information. I said who are you as he did not identify my bank by name. He just kept repeating this was a legal request. He spoke with thick accent. I contacted my bank who advised that this was not a bank phone number and no they had not made any calls to my location. They said that if I ...

^ Good for you. It should be known by all people that Canadian banks NEVER ask for account verification for any of their products by email or phone.

had these guys call me about a month back...that number is spoofed. They are working out of a boiler room in India somewhere and they pose as Visa/ Mastercard and they use many different tricks to get you to give up personal info on your cards. Sometimes they even call to say your card has been compromised and they need to ...

They do sometimes call, yes. But they will tell you why they are calling and you should not have to ever provide any info to them. Eg. when on holiday or making a large purchase they call to confirm that it is me using the card. Citi bank is particularly active and has actually suspended my card when on holiday. I now have to tell them my plans ahead of time.

Well, if they are calling you, they need to confirm your identity which involves the usual questions. Now, if you're not expecting a phone all be cautious.

While I haven't had any calls, one thing that happened to me was when I ordered something to be delivered to my office, the vendor told me I had to contact the credit card company. When I called, they said it was because I was ordering something to be delivered to other than my billing address. I then asked them to add my office address as a valid shipping destination. No problems since then.

I've had that happen as well. Credit card fraud is a large problem so I don't mind.

The best advice I have read is to ask the caller for the VISA Number, then hang up and call back. If its real, they will provide you with the correct number for your bank and you can ...

Hugh...your idea not only works for Credit Card scams...but it's what I use for all telemarketers as well. I simply ask nicely for their phone number and tell them I have no time at the moment to speak with them. Most will give a song and a dance as to why they can't...and receive a hangup for their trouble.

Personally, I'd like to see Bell mandated to block obviously spoofed numbers. I'ved had telemarketing/spam calls from 000-0000 and 911. How can you *not* answer when 911 is calling you!. Another frequently used number is 123-4567. With the technology available today, it should be easy to trap and reject huge volumes of calls based on routing information and caller ID.

I've been asked to confirm purchases several times due to travel - they see purchases sometimes pop up in a different city in the morning and I might be using the same card back in Calgary that night. On one occasion it was a someone using my CC number in Mississuaga, and I had actually been there two days before that - so I was glad they caught it. (Had to cancel that Visa and get another). This was at a gas station, and the Visa people...
