Thread: Continuous Glucose Monitor

Need some help from those of you with CGMs.  My endo is suggesting one for me.  I have read some posts here about them, but want to get some feedback before I decide.  Here are some of my questions: I understand that you insert a canula, like the pump and then attach the monitor reader to that.  Where do you insert it?  Is there a three day change out rule? Is it taped down on the ...

Hi Bogans,  I used the CGM from minimed for the past year and found it very useful.  I don't anymore only because my Insurance decided not to pay for it anymore.   You can insert it anywhere you would normally do your pump.  Your supposed to change every 3 days but I used to get 4-6 days from one.  When your inserting them it is best to point the needle down as it has less chance to pullout...

If you are analytical, at the very least, do a free trial.  Dexcom offers one and I think the Navigator people are starting to do trials too. In the first few weeks of having a CGMS, I learned more about how my bg behaves than I had since diagnosis.  For this information, it was well worth the effort. BUT - they are, in my experience, painful to insert and some sensors are crazy ...

Hi, My son (16) just got them a week ago. He loves it so far but we are still trouble shooting. He also noticed a really inaccurate reading (CG- 250, meter- 140). Does anyone have any other advise on how to keep them in? I will tell him to point needle down. They are only staying in about 1 1/2- 2 days. He plays lacrosse and does put tape over it (IV300 or something). Today it just stopped ...

Hi kimank, I only have experience with the Dexcom Seven.  With that one, if you don't calibrate within the specified time, it will keep beeping at you and will stop giving readings.  Once you calibrate, it will start working again.  1.5 - 2 days per sensor sounds terrible - for me it usually takes about a day to get decent readings out of a new sensor.   I assume he's using the MiniMed ...

Hi Julie, yeah he does scrub area and uses the tape so I'm hoping it will be better after lacrosse. Yes, he uses the minimed. Well the sensor will last longer than the 2 days but they fall off that fast. Good to know re:calibrating. I was afraid that we'd lose the sensor completely if we forgot to calibrate. My sons A1c stays around 11% . He does this to prevent any lows. Now, 90 feels low ...

Hi I was using the Dex system.  You wear the sensor for 7 days, it has an adhesive on the back (body side) and it stays stuck pretty well.  No extra tape needed, and can get wet.  I found the insertion process to be a bit awkward, but my thumb and first finger are permanently numb.  There is a needle involved with the canula, you never see it.  It does hurt some, more than my Pod ...

Hey Barb - I wonder, when we get the OmniPod PDM upgrade if it will automatically work with the Dex sensors AND already have the SevenPlus software?  If it does and I find it more accurate, I will definitely let you know. Julie

Hi Barb, People are using the Dex on their arms and I think that they have said that they are more accurate there. I don't know if you gave your sensors away yet, but you might want to try it. There is a couple of brothers that are doing a trial on the new Dex and the pics on the CWD board show that they are wearing the Navigator on one arm and the Dex on the other. It is a free trial so I ...

Hi Is that the new "improved" Dex on the arm?  My trainer never mentioned that to me, and there is nothing in the instruction book about other sites. I still have the sensors, I think the FM here removed that post for some reason.

Sure, think about it.  Mine can only be worn on the tummy.  Preferably on either side.  I tend to stay put in one spot all night, maybe roll to my back, but on a side most nights.  So if you are sleeping on the sensor, which is facing the mattress, nothing is being sent to the receiver, untill you move. Now, maybe with the "improved" sensors that can be worn on the arm, maybe there would be a better chance for something to be...

I should have been more specific.  The CGM will be from Mini-Med, as my pump is from them and the CGM talks to the pump.  Sorry.

Does he use a barrier tape over the sensor and transmitter? I use Opsite Flexifix and it works quite well - acutally hurts to pull of after the first few days. I find that the MM CGM adhesive itself sucks, but you have to cover it with something or else the transmitter will cause it to fall off or rip out. I have also found that putting a little neosporin or vaseline on the transmitter and sensor before you put the barrier tape on helps to...

If your insurance will pay for the CGMS, you should try it out.  Some people love it and have good results.  I used the Minimed system for about 6 months.  I never had results with it that I could trust and I found the system a tremendous amount of work.  sometimes it was close to my meter, but other times it was 200 points off.  Since it never told me "this is a good result and your can trust it" or "this number is crap...

I have the Minimed CGM and love it.  I use each sensor for 6 days but have had trouble try to stretch it past that.  I calibrate my sensor as often as I can.  I test before and after each meal anyway so as long as my sugar is stable then I go ahead and calibrate.  That helps me not for get and then end up with a weird calibration time like the middle of the night.  One time I had a cal error signal on my first day of a sensor and was...
