Thread: Contact our congressional reps

Started 2 months ago by 2012kpmam
Got a message from DS that the Dept of Transportation is looking to cut funds for KP. The word is that they want to cut adjunct professors, including tutors. Does anyone know about this? If the tutors are eliminated, a huge number of students would fail. All wise alum and parents have said over and over that no one gets through this place on their own. I am assuming that also encompasses ...

Last Sunday, at our local parents meeting, we were told that the National Parents Association is preparing a campain to address the recurring funding issues originated at MARAD. They are preparing draft letters that we can use and send to our congressmen. We urge everyone to do so.

Is there a way to find out who in Congress is on the commitee that controls Marad? It would seem that would be the people to target as well.

I'd start with the Transportation sub committee and go from there. My Congressman is on it but, the last time I wrote to him it took three weeks for him to respond. (Barbara Boxer took two days and I don't even live in California.) The answer I got was so curt and so condescending that it cost him my vote in the following election. Honestly, it seemed as though it had been written by an intern ...

Thanks for the information. let's make our voices heard now! I hope they can multi task and think about other issues other than health care.

I spoke to a senior academy official who said that the rumor about tutors being cut as a budget cutting move is totally false. So parents, relax, our Mids will get the help they need.

Hi folks! Please don't start sending a letter campaign willy nilly. The national parents association is grouping and will let you know when and to whom and what issues need to be addressed. If you hear a rumor, email one of the National Officers or your state president and they will look into it. If we start sending random letter to our MOC's then we will loose our effectivness. ...

I'm curious how a rumor that was deemed to be false has, in fact, come to fruition. According to DS, there is no tutor for Calculus 2 this trimester. What gives?

2012kpmam replied 4 weeks ago
My DS told me the same thing - no Calc II tutor. On the goverment jobs web site there are several jobs posted for KP: Math teacher Physics teacher Writing teacher Engineering teacher Chemistry teacher Spanish teacher - ? Could the math teacher spot be for a tutor? At any rate, they definitely need a Calc II tutor. Calc II is supposed to be harder than Calc I and we know what ...

My DS also said that not all professors are full time teachers. Therefore, they have very limited office hours and that the tutors are essential since they are scheduled and regular.

Sure would like to know who these good samaritans are. DS went to his professor last tri and was told to "read your notes" - just another benefit of tenured professors in the world of academia.

Based on my understanding from my own DS, the posts of the various parents here and k314sig09's post I would say not a lot has really changed in 30 years. The slogan then was "cooperate to graduate" and at least back then we weren't talking about anything that ever approached any sport of Honor Code issues.

I think it should be noted that, while yes the tutors are helpful, the best help any Kings Pointer can get is from his fellow midshipmen. I got through all four years of Kings Point without having to go to any teacher or tutor for extra help, when I was confused on a subject, didn't understand it, or needed to study, I would go to anyone in my section and they would help me out. On the flip side, if I ever understood a subject well and...

Until I read this thread, I thought all of the tutors were Mids. My understanding was that qualified Mids were given opportunities to tutor in return for privileges. DS is at sea right now so I cannot confirm, but I am pretty sure he was tutored by an upperclassman in an official capacity - and then would join in study groups with buddies every chance he could. His experience with professors rivals USMMAGUY's - not very helpful.
