Hi All.
I love 911's.
Got my eye set on a 1999 model.
Ive been warned by most mechanics to STAY AWAY as they are very costly to maintain.
On the other hand, i've been told they are made to last and are very reliable.
I wont be driving the car too and from work. Most driving will be on weekends.
I am single ...so dont care that the car isnt roomy.
The ...
Which mechanics are doing the warning? How much do they actually know about Porsches?
Questions their motives for such a blanket generalisation.
How much you get burned depends on so many factors.
..the condition of the car you buy, the previous owners service activity, where you take it to get work done, modifications...
Well maintained 911's won't necessarily cost more to maintain...
I agree 100% with Black5 and would suggest reading a couple of the threads in this section of the forum, which dispell a lot of myths and give some good advice from people with real Porsche experience.
Thanks Vinnie, thanks Black5.
That exactly what i'm after.
Real recommendations from Real 996 drivers.
I'll have a look through previous topics.
Other responses are most welcome.
Which 996 is this?
Plain jane carrera or TT?
Can't give any info on maintainence but I could probably hook you up with the performance aspect of them. Not aftermarket, ie getting the most and how the 996s stack up against eachother vs 997s etc - opinion based (& not mine, because I haven't driven 50 of them )
If you're going to drive the car only on the weekends and to enjoy the drive I suggest you get manual. The tip on the 996 sucks (a lot better on the 997). I have a couple of friends who got tiptronic carreras simply because they couldn't find manual ones at the time.. they all regret it now.
go talk to a porsche mechanic/specialist if you want to get an idea on maintenance and parts prices. they're the only ones that'll give you the real story. so many bullshit stories going around about these types of cars.
+1 on avoiding tiptronics. i've never heard a good thing about them. if you're getting a porsche it has to be a manual. aything else greatly increases your chances of ...

any pics/details of the car in question? I'm sure the owner would be willing to let you give it an independent test before you purchased it, perhaps even try to squeese a service out of him while its being test at Melb Porshe? I got a major service paid by ex owner - Its a buyers market at the moment

I had beer money and champagne tastes a few years back. Ended up buying an SLK Merc over a Boxer. Drive them all, dont be fooled by a brand name, get what feels right from the drivers seat for you.. Good luck Bazzle
