I teach at a school where we didn't make AYP in 7 years. Every week we have a different intervention to initiated. We have behavior programs on top of other behavior programs. If we don't pass the tests this year we will be shut down. I totally believe that all behaviors can change if the environment is controlled, but is it possible to get kids up to grade level if they are between 2 and 4 years...
Hmmmm, why are they not at grade level now? You indicate that behavior isn't a problem. Do you think it's not a problem for other classes in your school as well?
And is AYP a matter of getting kids to a particular grade level, or is it a matter of progress since last year?
Do the students and parents understand the school is in danger of being closed, and if so would they care? Do ...
So what will happen to all of your students if your school is closed down?
This punitive system for "failing" schools is an absolute joke. All it does is further disadvantage the schools and students who are already struggling due to range of complex reasons that cannot be reduced to a few test scores.
Why can't the government simply introduce programs and work together with staff to ...
Where are you located?
I teach about a half an hour from the border and our kids have a tough time. We have many EL student, low income students. They are not up to grade level. We just changed to a new curriculum and all are hoping that this is the answer.
I teach in Philadelphia. Overall, our school has serious behavior issues. My kids listen to me. If we are closed down we will turn into a charter school. I will be far away from this school if it turns into a charter school. I will just relocate to a different school in the city. I really don't think most of the parents would care. A lot of them would probably think that it will be a good thing ...

I just feel the tension that the administrators are getting from the city and state. It trickles down onto us. It is like a witch hunt. If we make one mistake they are constantly on our backs. I understand that this is urgent, but don't blame teachers.
This is what is going on in my school. We are under a microscope BIG time this year due to...
Bumble...I could have written your post, except that I am in a high school. It's my first year teaching and it's really rough. We have major behavior issues, but if it was just that it would be ok. However, the admin is less than great for sure. It also feels like a witch hunt most of the time. A lot of my 10th graders read at a 4th grade level, but we are supposed to get them up to grade ...
I'm just an aide, but our school is in the same situation. We have behavior issues, but I believe many of my children have such severe emotional needs that they should not be in a regular third grade class. These behaviors take up a lot of time that could be spent teaching. My teacher also has to rush through the standards and does not do much in the way of creative lessons.
The school ...
I see this as the great failing of our public education system -- the brightest and best behaved students are pulled out by parents and sent to private schools (and who can blame them?) so the percentage of students who are low, have behavior problems, need special services that quite frankly aren't always there, or have severe emotional issues, increase. Yes, these children need an education ...

We occasionally have a higher-up visit our school on our days when we meet as a grade level. They'll talk to us as though we're incompetent and...

So sad- we are on our 2nd year "on the list" but we don't have Title so we're a little different in the "punishment." We were discussing the "all children proficient by 2012" and think it's so unreasonable since they change the proficiency level every year. How are we supposed to help these kids reach the bar when every year the bar is higher and higher? We jokingly tell...
Amen to this entire thread. The school I student taught at was taken over a few years ago. Admittedly, there needed to be some curriculum changes--but.... nearly the entire school of 1,000 had a 1st language other than English. Big surprise they struggled on the test. My first year in public schools I taught in a building that was SI3 (4 years in a row of not making AYP). It was a tough building with lots of ESL students and dedicated,...
