Thread: Clicker Training

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by MandyPug
Has anyone tried it? I'm looking into it because from what I've seen it looks to be a really cool way to train and fairly simple. There's a lady i've met that specifically teaches clicker training and she has dogs, cats, birds, and mini horses that have been trained this way and are so well trained they've been in tv shows and movies and advertisements. I'd go to a class but A) I'm too cheap and ...

We've done a small amount with Tilly, Mandy and it was very effective indeed. We learnt it at puppy classes, where they gave us a clicker but it was a bit cheap so I bought a better one at my local pet shop. At our class we did one click for the start of the exercise and two clicks when Tilly achieved what we'd asked of her. Once she got the hang of it she knew that one click meant 'ooh get ...

I learned a bit at college. But that didn't go so good. I took TL in for the training sessions, and on our first clicker lesson one of the other students clicked it right in her ear. So, for some bizarre reason she didn't respond well to clickers after that. I plan to try some clicker training with Frankie at some point. He used to do a bit before he went completely off his rocker....

No hang on. 'Click to Calm' focuses on aggressive dogs, sorry. Prob not what you're after... Try "Clicker agility for fun and fitness" by Diana Bird. You don't have to do the agility part. But the basics are covered in there too.

Yeah we're more on the nutrition and food end of things, i probably could find one to order but I'll check out some other smaller stores first. I'm not in a hurry to start since Izzie is still healing.

I've used it with Moska when she first got here. It actually worked very well. I started at 8 weeks old. My problem is I'm not very organized, and I'm impulsive. I found myself forgetting to click when I should, and clicking when I shouldn't. I'd decide to work on obedience and realize I forgot my clicker. I think clickers are best for people who can keep to a step by step approach. ...

I bought Clicking with Your Dog. It's so very basic, not really worth it. I found more in depth teaching on the internet. Hopefully the book you're buying is more useful.

It should be. From what I understand, Karen Pryor is like the go-to-girl when it comes to anything 'clicker'

Izzie's doing fabulously. Solid cues: Sit Down Come Stay Back up Watch Me Loose Leash Walking Off Lead Walking Ignoring all people and dogs on walks Works in progress: Soccer Roll Over High Five High Ten Speak It works very fast and effectively. Chai and Ruby are even catching on!

Speaking of clicking, odd this thread jumped back to the front. I also 'restarted' clicking for Moska's heel. It's working great! It's an easy marker when she's in position and focusing well. The clicking noise also attracts her attention, obtaining an even more focused heel. It does have it's uses.

I did clicker training with both Dan and Levon, and it works very well, but like Becky I found the clicker to be a bit of a nuisance. To this day though if I pick up the clicker the boys get excited and think they're about to have some fun.

That one obedience class I went to and never went to again used clickers, and I really liked it. I've been planning on getting a better one but haven't gotten around to it. It's a good bridging thing.
