Thread: Clearly Defined Good and Evil?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Ervin
This point came up in another thread and threw it way off topic. Basically the question is; what do you think of clearly defined good and evil in a story, vs. very unclear good vs evil? personally, what I don't like are stories where the person I thought was the good guy becomes the bad guy. I don't like investing emotionally into a character like that and having him turn on me. When I say clearly defined good and evil, I merely mean that I know the good guy will be the good guy in the end. Now he can have a best buddy who betrays him, or who turns out to be the baddie, or ...

I like an elegant villian, who can portray good so credibly that the MC doesn't see the blow coming. The reader might--if they're exceptionally perceptive--but when the villian finally reveals himself for what he is I want that moment to be a "I should have known. It all makes sense now." as opposed to a "WTF??? Seriously?" kind of thing.

I like to read, and tend to write, where the roles are more ambiguous. Shades of gray and all that. But I still like the black and white and clearly defined roles of some works if they aren't too cliche.

This is what I meant when I said that I don't mind sterotypes, and that I dislike it when characters are deep and complex all the time.... as some of you might have seen in that thread. I don't mean I want the white knight to fight the black knight. I just mean I want my characters to be clear on who and what they are and where they stand, by the end of the story. They may explore, their stances ...

Gives their life or risks it? If they give it, well, then they'd be dead. I don't believe in karma or an afterlife so whether or not they're "redeemed" is purely in the eye of the beholder imo. If they risk their life to save someone else then good on them. But why should that be a get out of jail free card? Saving that persons life doesn't do anything for the person they killed.

In fiction , I wouldn't class him as anything, apart from human I'd write him, show his attempts at redemption and let my readers make up their own minds
