I wanted to discuss about it another time and more specific!

and textures, studying the light...etc
This camera comes with a 18-55mm wide angle lens, not a great lens though...
Now do I need to get a zoom lens like EF 100-...

There are two different 500D kits. One comes with the cheap (and not amazing) 18-55 lens. the other is more expennsive and comes with a very solid 18-200 IS lens. This is a great all purpose lens for gathering reference shots.

Hello MF3dream
If paying the extra money for the 18-200 is not a problem, Then don't even have a second thought Just go and buy it, I will explain the reasons below for saying that.
If money is a problem just go with the kit lens shoot for a while and see for your self ...
Its a great lens combo and you can never go wrong with it.
The 50mm is a least expensive lens so you...

Agreed that dust is not a major concern when changing lenses. In fact if you use zoom lenses, every time you zoom in and out the camera is pulling air in and pushing it out (since the volume between sensor and back of lens is changing). More dust is likely to get on the sensor from zoom lenses than changing lenses. Either way its not a big deal, just clean it once in a while with one of those ...

I don't actually carry around all 8 Just trying to illustrate that dust isn't a reason to not swap lenses.
Here is a review of all the 18-200/250/270 range of lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tamron:

Tamron 18-250 looks pretty good for $200 less, especially at f8. Wide open the canon does perform better.

For those that are interested Andrew Kramer has uploaded a quick video 'Sam Vs Sam' on Video Copilot using the 7D with the kit lens and the 50mm 1.4 (although he actually showed the cheap 1.8 mk2 in a previous video). http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2009/11/sam-vs-sam/
Oh yes, Thanks to all guys that contribute to this topic specially to "ThirdEye" for his story! Ok I'll going to choose Eos 500D plus a 70-200mm, 50mm 1.8 or Tamron 17-50 f/2,8 for the wide side.
From what ive seen of sigma lenses, their quality control leave a lot to be desired. A few years back Janine bought a nice big expensive something-200 sigma zoom to replace her plastic fantastic made in Taiwan thing. The Sigma was pretty rubbish, it never gave a sharp image. Flogged it on ebay a week later.

Find a shop that rents lenses and check them out prior to purchasing. I rent a variety of canon primes and zooms from this local vendor and it isn't that expensive http://www.glazerscamera.com/rental...ras-lenses.html If you are interested primarily in texture shots I'd advise you to stick with primes to alleviate a variety of distortions that zooms will have an abundance of. Also check out the reviews at Photozone if you...
