Thread: Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-40, Snowblower & Lawnmow - Bob Is The Oil Guy

I was out at advance picking up some oil for my snowblower. It's a Chinese honda-clone 208cc OHV engine. It calls for 5W-30. I overfilled the mower so I figured I would get a quart to change both of them. Well, they had something that caught my eye. I figured that the mower called for straight 30w, and the snowblower called for 5W-30. Well, I crossed out 5W-30 because it would be too thin for ...
I use synthetic in everything with a spark plug. BUT, I think the 10W is too thick for 'dead of winter' cold. If the blower is stored indoors in a heated garage, then OK. I'm a convert to 0W-30. Two years on GC for the snow blower and the last two years on Mobil-1 0W-30. Works great.
I would have gotten 5W-30 but I think it would be too thin for the lawnmower during the summer, and 10W-40 seemed like a good comprimise. Mabye I was wrong?
It probably won't cause you any problems, but for snowblower that will see only cold-weather use, I'd only ever use a full synthetic 5W or 0W oil. For the mower, the 10W-40 SB will be an excellent oil....
5 yrs on GC 0w-30 for my snowblower Ariens OHC 13hp,lawn mower John Deere 5.5hp OHC and Gererac 8kw generator OHC 13hp.Once a year OCI on these engines. The generator ran 15 days straight last Dec with 3 day OCI. No problem, they all runs smooth as silk.
Pull start and electric start. Will it be THAT bad with 10W? I know trying to start the lawnmower with straight 30 in the winter was hard, but would 10W be that awful?
Well I went back to the store, picked up a bottle of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. The only 0w oil was Mobil 1 0W-40 and I didn't want M-1, and everyone said a 30w, so I figured PP 5W-30 would be perfect. I drained the Castrol into an empty PYB bottle, labelled it for lawnmower, and stuck it on the shelf.
Ok I'm sorry JTK not everyone, you have my apologies. I did look for 5W-40 but they did not carry it. I was amazed they didn't carry a 0W-30 either. One way or another, I have decided to use the Castrol syntec 10W-40 in the mower in the future, and Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, or some other 0W-30/0W-40 oil in the future. I did consider the Mobil 1 0W-40, but I am hesitant to use Mobil 1 (which was also $3 more a quart than PP was)
I think you made a good move. Snowblower will be just that much easier to start in very cold weather. I mean, when you have to get a large snowfall cleaned up so cars can use a laneway, you don't want to be struggling, or wear yourself out, just trying to start a snowblower.

This year is my first full year on Amsoil Small Engine Formula 10W30/30W. Down hear in Texas we have hot sticky days. Over 100 degrees. Between the lawn mower and edger both oils look fine...the mower is honey color.
