Started 1 month, 1 week ago by FreeRider001
I just brought home a 05 DRZ400 sm I bought from my father-in-law. As with the first bike I bought from him it's super clean and has had very little use but like the first it has been sitting ALOT!! and thats the problem. It starts perfect and idles fine with the choke on. If you you touch the throttle it suddenly dies. It will idle without the choke on. I cleaned the carb completely and...

I've been working on it and it will now run when you turn the throttle but it bogs and sometimes dies when you take the choke off. What is the factory setting for the mixture screw anyone?

I assume you drained the old gas, and put in fresh gas, right? What does the plug look like? Make sure all the vacuum lines going into the tank is correctly connected as well.

Yes I drained the old gas and put fresh in. I also put a new plug in. I ordered a jet kit earlier and have given up trying to get it to work Im just going to rebuild it. atfer sitting for so long the jets are most likely bad. Thank you

Jets don't normally go bad you should be able to clean them, I would get the carb soaked as well you could have some small passages plugged up that jets won't fix, don't do it half ass you will just wind up chasing your tail trying to make it right, do the full teardown soak it and the jets, replace your float needle and any gaskets that look suspect (set your fuel screw at 2 1/2 turns out)

FreeRider001 replied 1 month, 1 week ago
I went ahead and ordered the jets because I had to order a pin for the front caliper anyway. I feel like I've clean it really good but I haven't soaked it over night or anything. What should I soak it in?

You can get a carb cleaner dunk in a one gallon paint can from most auto parts stores, mild agitation and a good couple hour soak will do the trick, be sure to remove ALL rubber components before you do this, no offense but I see it every day where someone thinks they did a good job but the carb is nowhere near clean, soak it, this will save you a ton of time and headache.

Put a new pilot jet in it. Common problem. Don't even waste your time trying to clean it, the orifices are way too small. They are less than $10 at the Suzuki parts counter.

seafoam. u can get it at the auto parts store. drain everything, carbs included. dump in the seafoam, spin the engine over till the carbs fill up. let it set for a coupla days and drain off the carbs again. fill fuel tank with premium and a coupla shots of carb cleaner, start it and run a coupla tanks thru it with the seafoam added. should clear the carbs up. ...
