Thread: Can Cats Have SA?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Gir
This may be a silly question but... Can cats get separation anxiety? Within the last couple weeks of having Gir he has become very attached to me. He cries if he is left out of our bedroom and I mean cries.. and he'll actually get to the point where he will have a high pitch meow, almost like a scream and scratch on my door. He follows me everywhere he can including the bathroom. ...

YES, CANS CAN DEFINATELY HAVE ANY SORT OF ANXIETY. PRETTY MUCH LIKE HUMANS. MY FURCOUSIN USED TO BE ON MEDS! HE GOT TO WHERE HE DID'NT NEED THEM ANYMORE AFTER A WHILE.

Yes! It is not as common as it is in dogs, but I recieved the diagnosis for SA about 4 years ago. I am half Siamese and Mom was told by a handful of people they are known for being a little more demanding and needy than other cats. I would throw fits and destroy things to get attention while my people were getting ready to leave. Worse yet I would scream at the window for 15-30 mintutes after ...

Yes. For a while as a kitten, I had pretty high separation anxiety. I would whine at the door whenever mom would leave. I would also be anxious about dad when he was in the bathroom. Having a second cat around has lessened my anxiety a bit, but I am still a little bit more clingy than most cats. I'm not saying a friend for Gir will work in your case, but you might want to consider the idea if ...

Right now is not a good time to get another cat. The reason we have Gir is because my MIL passed away recently and left her cat and 2 dogs to us. So now, we have 5 dogs and a cat (not to mention my 16 year old SIL). I do not think we can take on another animal at this time. Also, Gir has FeLV so, I'd have to find another cat that also has it (or so I was told). Thanks for the advice Edited ...

I had problems when my Ava passed. Mommy tried everything, and I went on Buspar for a few weeks. When Minka arrived, I started to act better and went off the meds. The new cat just misses his former owner and just needs to know he won't be left again. Once you bond, hopefully he'll settle down.

Ah, ok, that explains it. I don't think that Gir understands that his former owner is dead. All he knows is that she is gone, and this has given him some anxiety. Like the other poster said, depending on how long you've had him, it'll just take him a few months to realize you won't go away never to come back (the way he thinks your MIL did). You'll just have to be patient and reassure him. I find...

Aw, poor Gir! Yes, I think Boris is right. Gir is just really anxious, sad and confused that his human is gone. I noticed Gir is 10 years old. There is a Catster group called "Olde Furts" that might be helpful to you. Here is the "clickable" link: Olde Furts when you get there you can just ask the administrators fur an invitation and I can guarantee you will receive an invitation ...
