Thread: California UPS: What up with dat?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Tom Fury
So, My brother just shipped my S&W 4506, a couple of slide assemblies, 4 mags and a holster from Sacramento to my FFL/LGS in Lexington, Ky. I had anticipated they would require him to ship overnite to my FFL, but he says he was required to break it down, ship three slides in one plastic box, and receiver, mags and holster in another, separately, all ground... I knew CaliUPS might ...

UPS shipping regulations are very clear on how to ship handguns. And "ground" isn't allowed. Shipping a frame or receiver is exactly the same as a complete gun.

Yes, there are folks out there who think this is legal and some of them work for UPS. It's not legal. But it happens. I had a UPS counter employee suggest this method to me about 10 or so years ago. I did not take the risk as I knew better. The risk is if it is stolen or a supervisor catches the trick in the delivery pipeline. At a minimum, you'd never be reimbursed the insurance, or have...

Its not illegal to ship ground it is just company policy to ship handguns overnight.

it is only their policy, but if you don't follow their policy, they won't cover any lost of your property

<<"it is only their policy, but if you don't follow their policy, they won't cover any lost of your property">> Yeah, but if you ship a package and and insure it, and it is lost or stolen you are still going to get reimbursed the price you insured it for. They don't know what was actually in the package because it was lost.

maybe, but how about damage?

barneyrw replied 1 month, 1 week ago
<<"maybe, but how about damage?">> No maybe at all, if it's lost or stolen it's gone. If it's box'd up properly, damage is pretty remote, it would have to fall under the wheels of the truck and get run over or something just as remote.

You are only violating a "no shoes, no shirt, no service" type UPS policy, and if they don't like it? Tough sh^t. If it gets lost, you will be compensated for the insured amount. I was...no hassles...and they ...

The ATF FAQ needs correction. Quote: ATF FAQ's: (B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or...

I WAS right, Trebor. The answer to the FAQ by the ATF was too general and left out the "OTHER THAN" part, as contained in the laws. No harm, no foul not saying it's a firearm when shipping it back to the manufacturer for repair/warranty work...or an FFL as the thread was originally about.
