Thread: CYTA Speedtouch Modem or Netgear Router Modem
Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by kevin_turnbull
Hello All, does anybody know the rules regarding which modem/router we can use on Cytanet/Netrunner.
We want to replace the CYTA speedtouch modem with a Netgear Router/Modem as it should have better range etc but, we can't get it to work.
We have tried connecting the Netgear box to the Speedtouch box via lan cable and then (supposedly) out to the internet via the Speedtouch. (if ...
Hi Kevin
We have had this problem mentioned on the forum quite a few times..and the consensus seems to be the same...in theory it IS possible to install your own DSL modem but due to huge technical problems on CYTA's side, you will (as you already have found out) find very few work without issues. We do know of a handful of people who have managed (after many obstacles) to get their own ...
Hi Spyros, thanks for the reply. We are getting round to the "knock it on the head" way of thinking !!
We thought it might be something to do with releasing IP addresses but, we have tried doing this manually but nothing seems to work.
We have a Netgear Rangemax ADSL Modem Wireless Router DG834PN, does it make a difference that it is a Modem/Router?
Thanks
Kevin,
You may find that you cannot 'turn off' the modem function of your Netgear - on Modem/Router combo's it's usually the only way the device can access the net. I am not 100% sure on this exact model but that's how most combo devices work.
ironically this particular model has an excellent wireless function and has received much praise due to this![/quote]
Hi Kevin,
You could try cheating - set the lan address of the Netgear to something different to the speedtouch (normally 192.168.10.x, so set the netgear to 192.168.0.1 Subnet 255.255.255.0). Disable the DHCP server - then you turn it into a simple switch with wireless function.
I did manage to get a netgear to work with CYTA a couple of years ago, but when I tried recently could ...
That could work but Netgear are very fussy and amazingly annoying when it comes to tweaking like that..but I guess its a per case basis.
Good luck Kevin.
Just connected a new Thomson Wireless Router for a friend, may not be new to some but I have never seen one before, not the black Speedtouch model with the wireless button on the front but a new super duper model which looks incredibly like a Netgear DG834G.
Good range, no dropping out, was quite impressed with it.
Yes Ctya will swap the modems because my boss did it recently. But on another note the range is still rubbish. I am using a Thomson modem and the range is crap for example I have a timer framed bungalow so no concrete walls to go through. My modem is at the back of the bungalow and I only get three bars in the living room and sometimes drops to 2. If I am in the same room as the router I get 5 ...
I have to be fair to Cyta at this point (which is unlike me , I know!!) ...but out of all the modems that Cyta have supplied , the Thompson is definately the best one - especially when referring to the Wi-fi. Have in mind that the signal also depends on the 'receiver'..in other words the equipment that is picking up the signal...either the integrated wi-fi on a laptop or PC or the USB dongle kind....all depends on the manufacturer...

About 2 weeks ago I exchanged my old Cytanet ECI modem for a shiny new Thomson one. Altho when connected it works well and it also has unlike the ECI an inbuilt four port router, (as well as the WiFi which I do not use) I have one complaint - if Cytanet do any work on the network which disconnects me I have to log in again on the i-choice page when they have finished, with the old ECI it usually happened automatically. On another subject, the...
