Hollywood Reporter - Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning writer-director whose credits include Crash, Million Dollar Baby and Letters From Iwo Jima, has left the 'church.' His letter is a big step amongst celebrity Scientologists....
I love that he's taking a stand against Scientology's San Diego Church of anti-gay. Not to mention the general pwnage that can only come when a professional writer has you in his literary crosshairs. bravo.
Im glad to see that, with all of that deep study and self reflection, that one of those people actually came up with the right call. I dont care what religion, political party, or organization you are a part of.....when you sign up as a member you are complicit in their crimes when you support them. Live with your conscience and "religion" is an afterthought.
No wonder he was such a pretentious ass who thought his work was relevant still...20 years after it actually was. Hopefully now he will learn how the world really is today and write something current and topical and engaging.
He'll probably become a huge believer in the Abraham-Hicks "Law of Attraction" next. 25 years as a $cientologist and he's just now realizing its all lies? Bright guy.
He still buys into the ***** they're selling, he just doesn't support the organisation. This is interesting. Now here's an idea: if you have to believe this ludicrous *****, but don't want to play with the evil bastards making money off it, why not reverse-engineer an open-source version? If there are techniques out there that you think do some good, research them yourself, from scratch, and release your copyright-free...
About damn time one might say. It's nice to see he doesn't just run off like a coward tho, and that he actually takes the time to try and explain it to the people still inside.
I think this letter proves the contrary -- their support of Prop 8 is a 'truth'. It makes it much harder to deny how out to touch the values of the Church of Scientology are with the values of the celebrities that it courts. If it were more widely known that Scientology openly supported Prop 8, a lot of people, I think would be put in the position of either leaving/condemning it, or taking a long look at their condemnation of other...
I was cracking a joke. Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins all use the god gene to make sense of religion in evolutionary terms. Guess you didn't catch that.
The phenomenon of cults, like the Church of Scientology, are absolutely fascinating to me. It is amazing and, to me, very interesting how people can become so easily and intensely involved with this type of group. I have long been interested in this phenomenon of cults and charismatic people...Jim Jones, Manson Family, Obama worshipers, Ahmad al-Hasan, Hitler's Germany, Heaven's Gate, Branch Davidians, etc. It seems, to me, that it...
