I love my splatter movies and I love my gore but I was really dissapointed with the way it was done in this film, I'm really not a fan of CG blood and gore! It just looked totally fake and laughably bad, especially with the CGI-enhanced deaths which really take the biscuit (the Asian woman at the start was just bad but the way the guy gets killed later on with his CGI eyeball popping out was ...
Totaly agree with you, realy disapointed me (when I saw the eyes I wanted to turn off the movie, but I wanted to see the story).
I guess that the CGI alows the director to fully control the movement of blood and gore, so it helps him make it look more stylish, and it`s ok, but it doesent work well in a horror movie. They could change it a bit so it`s not a horror and than it would be awsome (...
The part where Mahogany smashes one of the hanging corpses genitals nearly had me on the floor! So ridiculous!
Oh yeah, and the CGI eyeball popping out was wonderfully bad. Ah, too funny.
So... do you like... stuff?
I HATE CGI blood and gore, but out of all i've seen, I thought this movie had some of the best, though it was definetly over used.
I thought the eyeball scene was great. A nice little nod to the Evil Dead series.
I agree, the CGI gore in the movie looked terrible and removed any of the impact from the gore.
CGI gore can work really well when the movie is stylized (in 300 it was great, for example) but in horror films like this it really takes you out of it. Bleh.
I actually liked how the gore turned out. Remember, this movie is equal parts action and horror: a stylized approach fits it perfectly.
(Don't believe me? Then explain why Leon and Maya decide about 2/3 of the way through that they're not gonna take Mahogany's sh!t anymore, and promptly kick his ass so hard his body parts end up in different time periods. Shame there was a whole you-kill-it-...
I would assume that it is all to do with time and money. I remember George Romero saying that if something goes wrong with a practical effect then it's extra time and expense to clean the set and set the shot up again. Also like was mentioned before, with cgi everything can be controlled to the minutest detail.

Totally agree with you there, bleedingkiri. The sad thing is that those hokey CG gore moments seem to be the added 'unrated' material, making this one of those rare movies where I'd far rather be watching the theatrical cut. They're so bad they look like someone ripped off an effects house by using the pre-vis tests without paying for the final renders! Or maybe it's just the director's payback on us all for not...
