Thread: C29ssmax vs. Stans Flow

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by rileymeister
So I am in need of a new wheelset and I have narrowed my search to these two. From what I have learned the c29ssmax is a pretty stout wheel. I am wondering if the Flow rim laced to CK hubs will be as strong and easy to take care of as the mavic. Any thoughts on both would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I think that both would be sweet wheelsets. I can say that I have customers riding a set of flows on king hubs on their mtn tandem and they smash the crap out of the wheels. I think the biggest difference is the ability to run tubeless with almost any tire on the stans rims and being more relegated to UST or tubeless tires, which are generally heavier and aren't available is popular tread ...

to possibly lighten the build up a bit do you think the Stans Arch rims would be suitable? I am about 170lbs, race sometimes, and will always run tubeless. thanks for the replys already, keep'em coming!

I had the C29ssmax for a year and i replace it with the stan for the follwoing reasonses: 1. Moving to 20mm excel, the 9mm is real flexy 2. after almost one year of usage the rear hub on the mavic break, its seems like a common problem since 29er wheels generate more power with the hub was not desing for.

The Flow laced to CK should be a much more stiff and durable build. The CK will outlast the Mavic hubs as well. As far as rims go, the Flows are pretty easy to use. Tires can be taken on and off really easily. I use Stan's yellow tape and that's it, though I do use UST or Tubeless-Ready tires.

I use the Arch rim with King hubs and love them. I weigh 180 and have had not problems with the wheel set. I have been riding on them for about 8 months. Brian

kings with supercomp and archs should be same weight than the crossmax. this wheelset should be much more reliable than the mavics and at least as stiff. stans are great for tubeless as well, UST are hardly available as 29ers anyhow. the flow rim is much wider than crossmax.

My Crossmax29 hub blew up after 8 months. I was surprised to see the scoring under the free hub body. Mavic replaced it under warranty but the down time was 3 + weeks. It's too bad the hub issue cannot get sorted out as it seems to be a common thread.

I just purchased Arch rims with CK hubs. Sounds like a solid option and if I am not happy I can build them with Flows. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Stans Flow with Kings. No question in my mind which I'd rather have... but then again it's what I run. I've been running two sets since over a year ago without a single problem. Great rims and great hubs. The mavics... maybe decent rims, but proprietary spokes and subpar hub... no thanks. In regards to arch vs flow. Depends on what you're looking for. Do you value stiffness and a wider...

I've been using chris king hubs for years and have the crossmax's also have alot of time on hadleys, over all the chris kings are less durable in my experience.I have to replace the hub body yearly on the king, have done nothing on two years of riding crossmaxs, still tight and smooth hadley hubs are my alltime favorite, durable easy to maintain and there engagement is bliss.if you ever rode 108 or 72 engagement you'll know what...

Much better option, for the money. Yes. C29ssmaxes and Crossmax SL and the...

The 108s used to blow up with regular frequency, though the engagement was sweet. The 72s are much more durable but the engagement is almost exactly like a King.
